"A 1980 will have the evil climate control servo"
Just read a post where I quote "A 1980 will have the evil climate control servo."
As mine is non-functional and leaking, I am wondering if anyone has done a transplant from a different year, for a easier system, and what that might entail...

I am surprised your car has this... my 80 does not... .many people have converted... that thing just costs too much money and is too quirky....

That servo is about $350 for a rebuilt one I believe. ad another $100 for the servo amp thats certain to be fried and check your Aux water pump.....
Not all that bad for a working system....................... I assume you mean the ACC in the lat W116 chassis or the early 123 chassis. THe monstrosity they bought from Chrysler.

Your car is a sophisticated as a brick...it has the much sought-after MANUAL HVAC controls. Manual controls don't use the evil servo assembly ...which BTW on the older Benzos is the same part as some late 70s Chryslers. Do a search on "Chrysler" and "Servo" in here, something will turn up.

Randy, did you read this thread before posting ? I know I don't have the evil box.... and I think some people have converted from the evil box to the manual controls like I have...
I guess you are not one of them ? |

Seriously, it would be one helluva hat trick to convert a car with a servo to manual controls. It's going to be difficult enough on my car and it has a monovalve/ACC system. At least on mine, the water hoses sorta kinda go to the same places as a car with manual controls.

Somebody out there in the aftermarket makes a kit for converting the servo type to a manual system. I think somebody on this board has installed one.

Randy, "my 80 does not... " THird post from the top... I should have asked if you had read the post ClOSELY.... LOL
Thanks Paul, I knew I remembered feeling good about someone being able to convert.... My parts wagon had one which I did not know if it worked or not.. let it go home with someone in Houston.... and then even when they found out they did not need it... they took it apart into little pieces... and I never even got the pieces back from them.... |

I have the old vacum climate conrol, the manual clmate control, and the electronic climate control on three different 300d cars. Not a big deal to switch over to the manual system, Though more involved than swapping old units for new.

Evil servo control
I'm only in my third week of MB ownership ('80 300TD), so I still don't know about ALOT of the particulars. Could someone post a pic of the 'evil servo control'. My wagon came with the ACC system bypassed in favor of a toggle for the compressor clutch and a toggle for the fan. My ACC has horizontal buttons and the one I saw at the salvage yard this morning had vertical buttons. Is one of these the evil servo, or are they both? I know I need to fix the situation with the bypassed controls and safety switches, but its hard to find the right info to do this when you've never seen it the right way!

The vacum system has vertical switches.
The electrical system has the horizontal. It is, lets say, sensitive. The servo, monovalve, heater control valve, or whatever whoever wants to call it today tends to get stopped up. A. from lack of use-really should let coolant circulate through it before shutting car down. B. People think radiator stop leak is some type of requirement and it clogs holes, period. C. No one uses coolant filters to catch all of the fun debris floating through the system. Last edited by lucforce; 06-01-2004 at 02:00 AM. |

I would love to find details on how to switch over to the manual setup, and if anyone has one or know what would fit, please let me know. I have no concerns about air conditioning, most of mine has been removed. I only want heat when I need it.
Can someone please point me in the right direction?
