Electric seat switch/ Odometer

I'm obsessed, I bought another "Snail", a 1982 300SD

Nice car, engine rebuilt 50K ago, etc.

I took the seat switch out of the passenger door, the back of the seat wouldn't move and tried to mess with it and presto! little balls and springs everywhere!

I think it needs a new one. Is the install a problem?

Also, my odometers are dead, buy new, have rebuilt or what? What about a used cluster?

Thanks

Can't speak from experience, but I have heard you get that "new father" feeling when you have successfully reassembled this switch.

I guess I'll never be a father then, that thing was worse than opening up a jar of compressed springs.

That seat switch can be intimidating to put together, no doubt about it. I priced a new one at $127.00, and decided this could be repaired.
The best tip I can offer it to use a little grease to hold the little springs and balls in place, No way to do it otherwise. Also get it where it is cool, or the grease will melt before you get is assembled.
Also the plug in part from the door can be all screwed up also. Seems there were some kits out that upgraded the switch, and the wiring inside that plug needed to be changed a little. Not sure about the 82. Maybe someone here knows. Anyway the wires going in are color coded, and there are matching color coded dots on the plastic part. The wires need to be in the correct place. Can be hard to get it right, as the thing plugs in facing you, but you have to assemble it the other way around.
Other than that, just proceed with the repairs much the same as with a window switch. Clean and align one part at a time.
