My wife had a 4900 pound Olds V-8 diesel station wagon. On a road trip from Washington state to Montana and back (800 miles) she averaged 29 mpg. The car had 210,000 miles on it.
Funny, but my 82 240D gets about 30 mpg out of 4 cylinders and about half the hp. Just bought a 300sd. My communte is 75 miles a day. I'll know today what the mileage is. God, I love these cars!

No, it's gone to the great big smoky diesel yard in the sky. Died of a blown headgasket while I was teaching my daughter how to drive (Dad, what's that red light mean? It's been on for a while.)
We owned 3 of those cars. One with 250k. The "good ones" lasted a long time. The crappy ones were converted to gas long ago. We drove the wagon from Florida to Washington state and back one summer. Ride like a limo, economy of a small car. We once put 10 sheets of plywood (4x8 sheets!) in the back after folding the seat down. The guy at Home Depot said it couldn't be done. After her wagon died, I found a great deal on a 1973 220D - our first Mercedes. Original lipstick red paint - turned more heads than any car I've ever owned. Sold it a few months later for more than I paid for it when we left to go sailing for a few months. My wife loves diesels and when my daughter took her Volvo last week, I bought her a 1982 300SD. While we were looking, I found a one-owner 1981 300SD with 150k that needed a few things, and she didn't like it. I made a ridiculous offer which was accepted (I found the original window sticker in the papers with the car - he paid $38,000!). So now we both have 300SD's. The only major issue left is the loose steering. I've been following the threads on this and haven't decided wether I'll buy a new box or not. My wife's steering is tight and much more relaxing to drive.

I did 480 miles last week using 18.5 gals.--thats almost 26 mpg--about 1/2 freeway and 1/2 stop and crawl with AC on full time.
I'm well satisfied.
