OM602/603 turbo intercooler kit from Mosselman!

Well I'll be darned. Mosselman Turbo, in Holland, offers an intercooler kit for the 602/603 turbos used in the 124/201 chassis. Claimed power increase is roughly 15-20%. There are almost zero details or specs, just a hint that they exist, and the before/after peak power numbers. A Google search turned up prices in the $1400 (Euro) range, so it ain't cheap. Anyone ever heard of these suckers?

http://www.mosselmanturbo.com/index2.htm

(click "Intercooler" at the center/bottom after the Flash crap loads, then mouse over the down arrow in the top/right corner.)

Comments? I'd kill to get a copy of the installation instructions, I want to know what's involved. I could sure use an extra 30hp, I'm just not content with having the fastest MB diesel in North America short of the 98/99 turbos! (And those, btw, put out about the same peak power Mosselman claims for the 603 kit - ~172hp.) Mmmm, 0-60 in eight seconds...

Dave, did you ever get email back from the guy regarding pricing? I'm thinking that after I get miscellaneous things sorted out this summer, I'll be brave and see how a Saab 900 intercooler (friend has a couple extra, hehe) fits in there. If I'm ever successful I'll post some 0-60 times. Currently they're around 10.1-10.5 seconds.

Additionally, it would be interesting to see how much it lowers EGT's!

Nope, no pricing yet. I really want to see the install instructions, as I strongly suspect injection pump tweaking is necessary (and more than just an ALDA adjustment, if you get my drift.) I would like to stick an intake air temp sensor into the 603 manifold (there are some spare plugs to use), and see what the intake temp is under load? Then compare that with the ambient air temp. Then, if we ever get an intercooler setup, use those results as a baseline & see how much cooler the air intake is. Anyone know where to get an air temp gauge for the intake? I assume something that reads up to 300-400F or so...?

Wow, lucky guess! Autometer makes air intake temp gauges that read up to 400 degrees F. They also have models that read 300 degrees F. Interestingly, they have another gauge for cylinder head temp.

Problem is, where would these gauges be mounted?

Cool! I'll check out the Autometer unit. I like their products, nice quality (well the ProComp anyway). Actually I just want it in there temporarily, so I don't care about mounting. I'll strap it to the steering column if I have to. Once I see how the temps normally are, I can yank it out & then wait until I get an intercooler set up.

Looks like we want Auto Meter #3435, reads 140-340F, with a 6-foot tube. Best price I have seen so far is this place for $59:

The liquid-filled #5435 looks nice too for $78 but not for something I'm only using temporarily! BTW, I couldn't locate the gauge you show the photo of above... what number is that??

Oh damn. I just found #4372. Are you sitting down? It's $250. It includes "temperature module and fast response thermocouple probe". I have a feeling the other cheap gauges may not have fast enough response time to keep up with the intake temp changes, as the heat is only really produced under load & high boost... It reads from 30-300F, sure looks like a nice unit. Hmmm...

The cylinder head temp gauges I've seen have a sensor that's something of a washer for the spark plug. I've also seen some that clip to the cylinder head fins of an air cooled engine. What's a CHT gauge for a Diesel look like? Where does it mount?

How about a GM MAF temporarily set in place of the cross-over pipe? Do some data logging then scour the internet for conversion factors. That should tell you a bunch about post turbo air flow.

87 300SDL
83 300SD ... any takers at $1100?

You can get a custom made intercooler from Spearco. Check out Dave Barton's Volvo web page:

http://linkline.com/personal/dbarton/SpecSheet.html

Page down to intercooler for a pic and link.

So much for the cheap route. Here's the scoop from Auto Meter:

Dear Dave,

Thank you for your interest in Auto Meter Products. Unfortunately, the
temperature gauge that you are inquiring about which is part #3435 is a
liquid temperature gauge. This gauge does not use a thermocouple probe
which is an air to air measuring device. Purchasing a thermocouple
probe separately and then attaching it to the #3435 would also not work
because the #3435 is a mechanical gauge and the thermocouple probes are
meant for electric gauges. The only other option that you have, is to
purchase any of our pyrometer gauges which utilizes a thermocouple
probe. The only disadvantage to this is that the readout would be from
0-1600 degrees. Granted you wont ever see anything higher than 300
degrees, you would essentially use only a fraction of the gauge dial.
If you have any further questions please feel free to email us back
here at Auto Meter. Thank you again for your support and interest in
Auto Meter Products.

Sincerely,
Mike Sueto

The Volve page had some great info, but no word on power gain - only intake temp drops. And that was a HUGE intercooler. Hmmm...
