Bad timing with respect to increasing fuel prices.

It needs the diesel option badly in the US. Waiting for ULSD, unfortunately, may delay it for a while. The new G class is supposed to have one and may come with a diesel under the over 8400 GVWR rules, if the rules even exist any more at the time of its intro. Bummer.

Did anyone go to the Dealer Launch Event today?

I'd love to get a diesel one of these R-Class models.

They just came out with a lease special on the R350 with luxury package. Go figure.

Besides the R 350 and the R 500, the R-class is also offered for the rest of world as an R 320 CDI. The R 400 CDI should come out in a few months.

Without a diesel, in some markets the R-class would simply be dead from the start.

Still, I do beleive the R-class is an overpriced Chrysler Pacifica with a sophisticated Mercedes-Benz engine.

I haven't seen one in the metal yet. I try not to form an opinion from photos, cars always appear different in person.

I read the R-class is built on the new chassis developed for the M-class. I does kinda look like a Pacifica, but I haven't read any intimations they share any parts. Not surprising they look a bit alike, they're the same market - a six passenger wagon/minivan that's trying hard not to look like a wagon or a minivan. Go figger.

up close and in person

Had a viewing in Atlanta last week.... and a review in Road & Track the same evening. I gotta ask- how many people really NEED all that space all the time? Why does the inaccessible third row HAVE to exist to make a vehicle marketable? Sounds like we have a population control problem, more than a niche market..... Are there really THAT many dogs and canoes and kids and suitcases and groceries and haybales and whatnot that need to be carried at the same time? At 135MPH? In a leather coccoon? With all the attending electronics? Wow-

I haven't driven it, but I did get to give it the once over and sit in it at the dealer last week. From the outside I think it looks good enough, and inside it is roomy and the glass roof is also cool. Very nice, inside and out, but it sure does not feel like a Mercedes.

I checked them out at my friendly MB/Volvo/Audi/VW dealer last weekend. Dare I say they looks like...well...overgrown, bloated station wagons. GASP

I was carefully checking out today a B-class, which looks much better proportioned and has a much better looking front and rear end than the R-class, all at half the cost.

Although, I do agree with several car analysts with their point of view that the A-class, B-class, R-class, ML-class and endless variations and permutations from Mercedes-Benz are really confusing the market and general public.

Mercedes-Benz lost its North from the time when it had only the C/E/S and G classes, all made right and specially suited to an specific group. Now the brand is so diluted that it is hard to figure out what are they trying to do.
