E 320 CDI sets world record

http://www.germancarfans.com/news.cfm/newsid/2050502.003

An E 320 CDI was driven 100,000 miles at an average speed of 224.823 km/h or 139 mph.

Despite the extreme stresses, the maintenance-free diesel particulate filter held up magnificently over the entire record distance without any deterioration in performance – further testimony to the reliability and durability of this exhaust technology.

We can't have them in Coll-ee-FORN-ya.

I for one would love to have one for my expected commute when I return to California for work. Too bad the State doesn't allow them. As it stands I will be just as happy with an older model diesel but longing for a newer model. Fortunately, I don't suffer from newcaritis that bad.

As it is beyond my means, I don't suffer from it much at all.

Still, it is appealing. I read that you get 0 to 60 in 6 seconds or so and this with 35 mpg. Whoa... not your grand-daddies diesel rig.

You see 'em on craigslist now and then with 8 K or so miles, I forget what the legal requirement is for selling them here. Course, they're going for $50K plus. Oh well, in a few years, they'll be in my range.

I thought that you could bring them into California after they accumulated a certain number of miles.

Maybe I was wrong.

I'm not sure on the diesels.

I know if you buy a new car out of state (referring to CA, for CA residents), say while on vacation. If the car has less than 7,000 or 8,000 miles you'll get tabbed for CA sales tax when you try to register, plus if it isn't CA smog equipped you'll have to have it retrofitted. Fortunately nowadays I believe most cars are like equipped across the board. Now if I buy one out of state while living out of state, I'm reasonably sure I could bring it in without too much problem, except for the fact that I still have a valid CA resindence and a handful of cars registered there. I might have trouble explaining not living there for a couple years, no matter that I have proof I wasn't, they have "proof" I was.

Talking Its not that hard...

Once they have accumulated 6-10K miles, you can bring them in, pay tax and register them. Last I checked diesels in CA still are smog exempt, no matter what. I have a few friends that have brought it used VW TDI's and I honestly dont see why an MB diesel would be any different. If you are a AAA member, you might want to call them or go down for a visit. They are VERY polite and just as knowledgeable as the people at the DMV directly. Heck, a couple local higher end used mercedes dealers have listed 1996-1999 E300's for sale with NO problem. Check into it; as it is not a big a deal as some might expect. Even in the good ol replublic of CA

We'll see how those catalysts like driving around town all day by an owner who thinks he's doing the car a favor by never exceeding 2000 RPM. With the torque those things make, I'm sure it's not terribly necessary to exceed that engine speed
