reserve free auction on ebay... have a friend with another screen name outbid everyone. That way you can control what it sells for... sounds shady but I know that is what some people do.

That's called shill bidding and is illegal. If you want to control what it sells for use a reserve.

Using a Reserve does nothing to "control" anything. Using the Reserve is for the insecure anyway.

"...there are no states where shill bidding is allowed. It's a federal felony offense. If it occurs in an online auction, then it's considered wire fraud and is punishable by up to 5 yrs in prison plus significant fines/restitution. Additionally, every state has laws against fraud, and shill bidding constitutes fraud. |

The poster I responded to stated that the OP should run an auction and shill bid. I stated that was illegal which is factually correct. I also stated they should use a reserve if they wanted to control the price. That is also factually correct. A reserve controls the minimum the car will sell for. And with a shill bid you quite often wind up with no sale as the shill ends up being the high bidder. When I originally posted regarding shill bidding being illegal, I wasn't offering advice on how to change the outcomes of any auctions. It seems you've taken the ball and run with it for some reason. The bidders always determine the outcome of an auction. I was merely stating the proper way of protecting one's interest in a vehicle. |
