In the past there were some topics on 16v brake upgrades. It talked about using 500e brake calipers, which I am no longer going to consider to use. It did talk about 400e brake calipers and mentioned 600sl brakes. If someone could enlighten me about using 600sl brakes, it would be much appreciated. This is what I am considering for a brake upgrade for my 16v. I want to replace all four brakes with 600sl brakes, is it possible. I check the prices on the current 600sl model. The prices were quite reasonable compare to 500e brakes especially the front calipers. I am wondering what year (600sl model) would work on 87 16v, what modifications if any, and any other parts I would need. And last I am going to run the brakes with evo II rims.(is there enough room for these front brakes to fit)
Thank in advance Mauro G 87 190e 2.3-16 [This message has been edited by mauro (edited 06-24-2000).] |

Since the 500E & 600SL brakes are virtually the same, either will require 8 x 16 wheels.
The early 500E's used aluminum Brembo calipers, most had to be replaced due to noise(s). I've never tried to install either of these on 190E16 but have done several 400E upgrades & very simple as well. Only 7 x 15 wheels are required |

as of June 14, my car(300ce-24) has been in the shop getting 600sl brakes put on it, front and rear. The front calipers are 4 piston, and barely fit underneath my 18'' lorinsers, so I am putting RENNTech 10 spokes on it which fit fine. ccording to the mechanic, he thinks that car will stop 10x better than it did before.

I don't want to butt into your business too much, but roughly how much is the upgrade to the 600 SL brakes going to cost you? (ballpark numbers would be fine). What all needs to be replaced?
Thanks Bill

It's funny you ask, but I got the brakes as a gift from RENNTech because my father is a mercedes dealer so I don't know exactly how much. I do know that the rotors they sent me were worn, and my dad bought new ones which he said costed him an arm and a leg, but i would estimate maybe around $2,000 for the whole set.???? I know the calipers are actually made by brembo because it is imprinted on the back, so they are good, and i believe the front rotors are close to 13'' and the rears are close to 12''. Ill try and find out the pricing and post it for you

also, when putting the brakes on, they had to cut the rear brake disc protector, (the black protector behind the disc), because the rear caliper was too big to fit inside it. The calipers and rotors fit perfectly on the car, as long as the wheels are not too deep, and I am changing the brake lines for ultimate performance.

early model 500e's used aluminum calipers made by brembo. these may or may not be the same part number as the front brakes on an evoII. later models used 500sl and then 600sl calipers on the front. the difference being that the sl calipers were cast iron and the 600sl rotors, although having the same swept area, are marginally larger than the 500sl brakes. basically, it doesn't matter whether you put 500e, 500sl or 600sl brakes onto your 16v, they are,u for all intents and purposes, the same and you will need replace the hub assembly and almost everything around it to accomodate the swap. it's not cheap. look to spend in the neighborhood of $2000.

Some people say that the hub has to be change in order to put the 600SL brake in the 190/300E. Some people say that this is just a direct swap beside considerating the size of the wheels. What is true? Does any one did it? Any inside experience can be shared?

Wondering ?
When upgrading to a larger caliper, usually the backing plate has to trimmed to accomidate the larger size. However this question is more concerned with whether or not you need to upgrade or change the master brake cylinder or power brake booster.????

in a nutshell, I would recommend that you change at least the master cylinder as well. you really should do the booster as well since the 4-pot calipers would need more fluid to actuate than the stock floating caliper.

The 16v and 2.6l 190's come stock with the 300E master cylinder and it works just fine for 400E/500E/600SL upgrades, no need to swap it out.
I am running the stock master cylinder with my 400E brakes and it works excellent |

Are brake boosters matched to the master cylinders? If i were to change out the master cylinder, would I have to change out the booster too?

Maddog:
You might try looking up your model under Fastlane and comparing the parts numbers to find similarities. For Example: 87 300E 70340 booster/33750 master cyl./1040 102348 rt frnt caliper 92 300CE 70340 booster/33750 master cyl./1040 90178 rt frnt caliper 92 400E 59102 booster/12251 master cyl./1040 90178 rt frnt caliper Comparing the above shows that the 300E (single piston caliper) and the 300CE (dual piston caliper) share the same booster and master cylinder part number. The 300CE and the 400E share the same caliper part number. This indicated that the 300E booster and master cylinder will be fine for the 400E caliper, as that is what is done on the coupe. This would seem to make sense as the 400E is heavier, especially up front, and probably needs the additional boost. Being lighter, the 300E doesn't need the boost/master cylinder change, which might result in overboosted brakes.
