Another quick update: The head is now assembled with the manifolds and turbos attached. The short block was supposed to be back together by this weekend but the piston gudgeon clips went missing and now I need to have them custom made (1-2 weeks).
My mechanic is going to use the next few weeks to continue assembling the kit, modify the brakes, suspension and start looking at the Autronic ECU. If anyone has already installed this kit on their M104 E320 engine and has some photos detailing how all the kit parts fit together, this would be very handy for my mechanic to have. |
If you're using standard E320 pistons then the 'C' clips are available from any dealer for about 25p ($0.50) each.
My problem is the opposite...I found a 'C' clip after assembling the engine so I'm stripping it down again to find out if it's from the Merc engine or not  |
Unfortunately I can't use the stock clips because I'm using forged Oettinger pistons in my short block. The clips are gonna cost me something like $15ea!

The gudgeon clips arrived and the engine has now been reassembled save for a damaged timing cover which must be replaced.
The next week or two should hopefully see some significant progress being made on the kit installation. Here's some pics and vids (nothing fancy): Buildup part 1 Buildup part 2 |

A quick update, I decided to take things a little further than just the TT kit.
Heres the updated parts list: AMG 3.6 crank Custom H-Section rods with improved squirt holes for the small end, the MB rods are not the best design as the oil feed running through the centre of the rod effects the strength of the rod. Pistons: the 3.2 pistons are cast, again this would limit what I can do in terms of boost. The 3.6 pistons are cast, so its either going to be a set of them or a set of custom forged pistons. Larger injectors, to solve the AFR issue without the need for the additional injectors used in the air intake. Uprated head bolts, the standard bolts are strech bolts which could cause the head to lift a touch under heavy boost, to avoid this im using non-strech bolts. Increase the boost on the turbos, with the above modifications should allow for the boost to be put up from 0.55 to 0.9-1 bar, around 13 PSI which im told the t2 will handle, but i may swap them for t25's. . ECU remap, ill get my ECU remapped to supply the injectors with additional fuel, and re-work the ignition timing. End result should be a little over 400bhp. |
Sounds interesting.
Are you sure the standard head bolts are the stretch type? Where are you going to source the injectors? It'll be great when it's done but that sure sounds like a lot of work. |

I dont understand it exactly.
Did the AMG 3.6L crank was forged?Did it fit the M104/3.2L cylinder? And the AMG 3.6L's piston is not forged? So does the conrod? So if I want to install the 3.6L kit into M104/3.2L,I shall increase the cylinder bore? |

Ortolan, I'm realy sorry to highjack the thread, but what did you exactly do to youre gearbox to cope with the extra umpf!? I've read somewere that you are keeping youre auto, and that you are beefing it up...
Nice to see you on the final stretch. Best off luck! |
I had my 4-speed AT completely rebuilt. There's an OEM 'heavy duty' rebuild kit you can buy apparently, not sure what the part number is (no longer on good terms with the guy who did the rebuild so he won't be of any help with the info).
The 722.3 is pretty strong to begin with. It's stronger than the 5-speed which followed it and many 350hp turbo conversions have been done on those cars without breaking the box (Mosselman, Turbo Technics, Lotec etc). I need to ensure I have adequate cooling of the AT fluid, at the moment my setup is still stock. Should be turning the key at the end of this month so definitely on the home stretch now! :D |
I'm really excited to see your car done, and dynoed... It makes me feel good to know there are people ho love these coupes, and are willing to take them back to the shine, grunt and glory they had in there days...

A little off topic, but another M6 kit (new including the exhaust) has appeared on ebay UK. Buy now at £1350.00
