Engine swap.

Hi!

I have a '92 190D 2.5 turbodiesel 5sp manual. I want more power but don't have the $$$$.

One option for me is keep on saving money and add some performance mods here and there.

The second option is go in the junk yard and buy an m103 or m104.

If I go for the gasser they can be had for about $500 in my country. I have a very good mechanic friend who might help me swap the engine for free.

I'll install a lpg injection since lpg is about half the price of diesel (petrol is more expensive than diesel).

How difficult is the swap? Will the trany bolt on to either m103 or m104?

Thanks for the opinions!

Deni

Whether you try to tune the M103 M104 or the OM602 you currently have its all going to cost alot of $$$$$

All 3 engines are limited to aftermarket performance parts. Most of the mods will have to be done by yourslef. And will cost alot of money.

I say if you want performance without spending alot of cash. Sell the diesel buy a 400E or if you can find one, a 500E and the performance of the 4.2L or 5.0L M119 will satisfy your taste for speed and performance.

For now, I just want about 200hp.

From my diesel I can get about 150-160hp by maxing out the pump. I've gotten to about 170hp. It was measured with a g-tech pro. In the 1/4 mile got 16.91 sec at 83.9mph. The 0-60mph time was 9.06 sec. So by maxing out the pump, installing an intercooler, tuning the lpg injection and installing a vnt turbo might get me close to 200hp.

I cannot find a 400e or 500e anywhere in my country. It is very very difficult to even find a 300e.

No body likes large engines here because of their economy and the fuel prices. I intend to convert it to lpg so the fuel will be much cheaper. LPG is ~$0.70/liter, diesel ~$1.59/liter and petrol is ~$1.65/liter.

A car with a large petrol engine is very cheap, so is just the engine. My mechanic friend tells me I may even find the engine for less then $300. I can sell my engine for about $1200.

Maxing out the pump, intercooling and a 55-trim turbo from a 3.5L OM603 will give you that 200HP no problem. It doesnt take much to get to 200HP on a diesel, the modded pumps by myna are 300HP at the lowest setting with the stock turbo setup.

The M103 and M104, will cost more in mods to acheive the same goal. Just read up on the mods done for those engines on this forum and the benzworld forum and youll see what i mean. Your better off with that OM602.

Well, the m104 is rated at 220 hp so it's right there.

I'm not quite convinced that the stock pump will be able to get the 602 to 200hp. Yes I can supply more air and cooler one, but without additional fuel ...

Myself I don't like petrol engines. Yes they're quiet, smooth and refined, but the reliability of diesels has won me over. I can service my car on the side of the road. With a petrol if I have an electric problem I'm screwed.

You answered you own question in this statement.
M104'ed 190s are quick.
If you can find a 3.2 M104 for $500, go for it

I don't know if it's going to be a 3l or 3.2l. But after talking to my mechanic he told me I can even get one for less than $200. The junk yards simply want to get rid of them as no one like large engines here.

I can sell my engine for about $1000-1200.

What do I need from the donor car to make the swap possible?

Now that I think about it....going to be a bigger deal converting a diesel to 3.2 EFI M104.
Lots of electrical stuff is different, easier to just buy a gas car to convert.
