Lightbulb Remote Start

Alright, here's the dilema. I have an '87 300E that I wanna put a remote start in. I found one on ebay for real cheap. It's the avital 3001 remote start. The problem is that avital says that you can only use it on a car that has EFI. So the question I have is whether my car is carburated or has EFI?? I'm pretty sure it's carburated. And if this system does not work on my car, is there any remote start kit out there that would work on a carburated car?? Also, can I still use this Avital 3001 kit in order to simply install keyless entry on my car? It's a really good deal on the system and I would hate to pass it up. Any advise would be much appreciated.

Your car is fuel injected (that's what the "E" stands for : Einspritz).

I'm almost certain that's the very unit in my 300TE. But just to be sure of its compatability, call the manufacturer, which I believe is Clifford (dba Avital).

I had to add some sort of additional component to interface with the MBZ vacuum locks, be advised.

I farmed my install out to a specialty shop. And in that shop there's only 1 guy that'll touch a Benz...apparently they're brutal to work on from a wiring standpoint, much more difficult to work with than your typical disposable car

Do you think it's possible for me to do the job myself though?? If not, how much did you pay for your installment and is there anywhere in the cincinnati area that could do it for me??

I personally wouldn't do it myself, but I'm generally disinclined to mess with anything electrical (beyond stereo stuff). Thing is, if tyhey short something out, they're on the hook for the repair.

I paid close to $300 (parts & labor & special lock interface) for remote start & lock/unlock all on one key fob

Installing a remote start can be a challenge. Especially if you do not have much experience with 12volt electronics. However, if you are careful, and take your time, a remote start is not too difficult to install. I installed more than 50-60 of them when I was in the mobile electronics field. Michael is right, the vacuum locks are tricky, if the unit has the ability to provide a 3 second output to the door locks you can built a small 3 relay circuit that will work with the MB locks. If it doesn't have at least a 3 second pulse, then you will need to obtain an aftermarket adapter that will work with the vacuum system. If poking around with a DVM makes you nervous, then you should certainly seek professional installation, I have heard of more than one airbag being blown by a careless installer using a test light. Good luck, and if you need that relay diagram, let me know, and I will dig it up for you.

I will try to dig up the diagram when I get home tonight. I also have a list of all of the wire colors and locations that you will need to complete the install. I will post them here when I find them .

Thumbs up

Vacuum Type Door Locks
Found mostly on Mercedes Benz vehicles, the movement of the door lock actuators is controlled by a central vacuum pump. The switch changes polarity on a single wire that may rest at power or ground depending on the state of the door locks. You can duplicate this with at least a 2 second pulse. If the alarm or keyless entry you are installing does not have a 2 second or longer duration option for the door lock outputs, do not use this diagram (it will not work unless you incorporate a timer into this circuit).

This info and diagram was obtained from : http://www.the12volt.com/doorlocks/page3.asp#vac

I am not connected or affiliated with that site, they just have some great info on the site. I used this setup on my 190 and have not had any problems. However, I do recommend that you test all connections and fully understand what you are doing before cutting into the factory wiring. I tapped into the factory wire under the drivers side floor mat in the wire channel next to the sill plate. I will dig up the wire color codes tonight. Good luck

Here is the wire chart. Once again, do not trust the chart 100% BE SURE TO CHECK EACH WIRE WITH A DVM before installing. Do not use a test light!! Good luck
