Been watching, not responding until now....

I've done a MB diff. conversion before as I installed a limited slip diff with 3.42 gears from a 92 Corvette into my 190/5.6 I also
have a 400E and a 3.08 ltd. slip diff from a late T'bird. I was going to install it in the 400E but after many track events in the 190 decided I'd like some lower gears in it but not many are available for the Dana44 diff. So, I've sold the rear end assembly from the 190 and will put the T'bird unit with 3.73 gears (cost $140!) into another subframe for the 190/5.6.

With gas prices hovering about like a pogo stick, I'm looking for a 2.82 also and found a '92 500E diff unit for the 400E. Questions are: my 400E does not have ASR (good) so is it OK to put a replacement diff in with or without ASR? Will an ASR diff work as an open diff without having the electronics to control it? Did the 92 500E come standard with ASR?

I also understand a diff from a 90-91 350SDL will fit if the rear cover is exchanged with the 400E cover. Any confirmation to this would be helpfull.

Thanks....

I'm 98% sure installing an ASR diff into a NON-ASR car would be fine.

1% uncertainty is:
will the signal from the ASR diff confuse the ABS?

Contact Carl of BergWerks (http://www.bergwerks.com)

BTW: what's the diff ratio for the 90-91 350SDL?

I'm looking to putting 3.07 LSD into a 500E. . .

PS: thanks for the radiator drawings. Did your buddy get one built? How is it working? Did he remove the viscous fan and install an electric puller?

I would like to install a 92 500E unit into my 92 400E (I have ASR).

My question is, how will i compensate for the speedometer error? How much will that run me?

What you need is the speedometer for a 500E (MB PN#124.542.02.69), which is an electronic speedometer. Retail is a whopping $474!

I'd check with a MB experienced VDO speedometer shop, and see if another model (e.g., 560SEL's circuity) might be retrofitted, or check with a junk yard for a used 500E instrument cluter.

Good luck!

I heard from somewhere that you can buy a little box that wires inline with the tail shaft output sensor so that it recalibrates the pulse signal to whatever rear end you put in. I wonder how much they get for them though.

I believe they are about $250. BTW- I believe dealer cost for the speedo is about $285, so wholesale should be about 20% above.

Good luck,

If I were to get a 500E speedo, Is it possible to have it calibrated to my current amount of miles?

Id probably have to send it to VDO.

Not a problem having your correct miles "dialed-in". In fact, I think that's how the dealer must sell it.

Try this outfit...

This is the same place I sent my 190 tach to convert it to an 8 cylinder tach when I installed my 5.6V8. Cost was about $120 and they are a VDO repair center.

Believe it or not I've been so busy that I haven't gotten to BergWerks to pick it up. Carl has been nice enough to let me keep it there until I can pick it up. Hopefully in the next few days.

Lunch sounds great. Next week?

Neil are you going to the BBQ in San Diego? Fad is driving down.
