6.0 AMG Engine Kit......

New member...my 92 500E has 227 K miles. I would like to know the following:
1) Does AMG sell complete 6 litre engines for the 500E? What is the cost?
2) Do they sell a kit (pistons etc)? Again cost?
3) Is there any reason a good U.S. engine rebuilder (eg. Ed Pink motors) can't rebore and rebuild this engine...I can't see it costing more than $10,000 for a grade A1 rebuild with new pistons, connecting rods etc.
4) Has anyone turboed this engine successfully?
5) Any one know of a good engine/transmission rebuilder in the L.A. area?
Thanks

I'll try to answer a few of your queries:

If you want an AMG 6.0 motor, you'll need to talk to (according to the AMG Brand Mgr at MBUSA) Barry Taylor at AMG West. But be advised-few on this board, if anyone, trusts the guy

You can also try www.performances.com , which is AMG Canada.

As to a rebuild, I think the biggest problem with increasing the displacement of the M119 motor is with the silicon-impregnated cylinder walls...they are not sleeved. I really don't know how they bore out these blocks and re-do the cylinder walls, but that's got to be a huge chunk of the astronomical prices the folks like Brabus and RennTech charge. I don't think anyone sells a kit for user-installation.

The engine was very successfully turbocharged by Mercedes, who campaigned this motor at LeMans, et. al. in the early 80s. I am not aware of any aftermarket turbo setups, but there are a few blower setups available.

I would definitely use Eddy at Performances in Vancouver, BC, Canada, over Barry Taylor.

Mercedes produced FACTORY 6.0L engines, and you can get them. Contact one of our members, Satish (do a search), and he can help you out.

List is $26K for a 6.0L, you can probably get it for $16K.

You can also contact AMG directly, although they will likely tell you that parts are no longer available amd the no longer do the modfication. Which makes you wonder about these other outfits that claim "AMG" 6.0 liter engines!

I have heard that Metric Motors in LA are a good source for rebuilds. They list a 119 for around $10,000.

You can talk to my mech Mr. MB Motors in Tarzana. Talk to enrique the owner. He is extremely knowledgable on mercedes cars, and may very well be able to do the job for you. His rates are very reasonable too.

He is not too far from you, and I would think rebuilding the engine would be a simple task for him. He rebuilt my tranny ina couple of days, and it is better than ever, and still shifts like it did the day I got the car back from him about a year ago and 8-10k miles on it.
