Modifying 2.3-16 Cosworths?
Hi guys,
I live in Western Australia (believe it or not!), and stumbled onto this most excellent site whilst looking for information on the 190 2.3-16 Cosworth's. My family has owned more Mercedes' than I can remember (560SEC, 500SEL, 280SEL, 190E, 300E to name a few), and I'm after my own 2.3-16. They're extremely rare in Australia - out of the 19 million people here, there's only 5 or 6 in the country. What I was wondering is, what're the basic performance upgrades you can perform? Besides tuning it to the best of it's natural ability (the right plugs, oil, etc).. Obviously, Cosworth do some amazing things with the engines, but surely it can be improved on for not *too* much financial gain. I was thinking an exhaust (no bigger tham 2.5") after the extractors, and perhaps a K&N filter - but what else is there? If someone could point me to off-the-shelf turbocharger/supercharger kits (though they're obviously going to be more expensive), that'd be great also. Thanks, guys! Chris |

Hi,
Mosselman Turbo Systems make a turbo kit for the 16v. Their web page is www.mosselmanturbo.com You can also do the EZL switch / R16 modification (search the forum). Some people here on the forum have done it and say that you can feel the improvment (someone said it's about 10 - 15 hp). Hope this helps you. Joreto 190e 2.5-16v |

Hi Joreto,
Thanks for the link - do you have any idea as to the price off the top of your head? I've sent them an e-mail anyway to ask, though if you know it might be quicker.. thanks again, Chris |

I think I saw a mosselman turbo kit somewhere on the net for $4500 which is a bit expensive for me, thats why I'm thinking of building a custom kit for my car. It's best to wait for thier mail since my information might be wrong.

Chris ... I received you email and will be happy to answer any questions on installing the supercharger that you may have. I had a couple of threads on this board as the project progressed. Just search for my name as poster. One of the posters even had a similar unit for sale (if you look to buy one, be sure that you get the intake and exhaust manifolds for the unit because they are unique to Mercedes).

Performance for a 190E
Hey Chris i know of a few very nice enhancements for a 190E. I have a 190E 2.3 16V and i put a K&N filter on it and that made a very noticible difference. That is definatly the cheapest and nicest way to gain a little power. Also i know that you can also adjust the ignition timing, which will give another nice increase in hp of about 5. I have also read some very interesting stories about what a few guys have done to their 190's. I read about a guy who purchased a compressor/supercharger off of an SLK 230 from eBay for $600 and managed to squeeze it under his hood. He said that his car completely blows away anything stock now. Also i have heard that you can order a nice turbocharger from England for about $5,000, which honestly is way to much to be spend on the amount of power you will actually get out of it. Another really cool modification that i have seen is a carbon fiber intake pipe that runs down below the front spoiler for a nice ram air effect. I beleive the intake was actually built by Renntech sp you could check that out, although im not sure of the cost.

another big performance booster is a better exhaust. for this car and stock header use 2.5" stainless steel pipe. eliminate the catalytic converter and/or gut the precats, if your local regualtions allow. eliminate the mid-muffler. have the pipe bent to go almost straight back to under the rear end on the driver's side. weld in a universal straight through muffler that is the correct dimension to fit where the old MB muffler went. you should get some very noticeable torque gains from this at all RPMs. you will have a little louder exhaust note though. if you want it quieter you have weld in a thrush resonator between the cat and the muffler to quiet things down a bit.

Thanks everybody for your replies!
I'll try and do this in order, forgive me if I get mixed up..
Joreto: USD$4500 is probably too much; given that the exchange rate from USD to AUD is about 1 to 2. I'd be prepared to pay for a kit like that if it came with things like forged, low-compression pistons and an intercooler (so I could run more boost), but for 5psi of boost pressure it's probably a bit over-priced. Jim: Thanks for that, I'll do a search this morning and read everything. I'll have a look around (and on eBay and the like) for superchargers, but if I can't get the manifolds can I buy them from Mercedes? Even if they'd be hideously expensive.. Jr. Benz: I'll have a look around for the K&N filter to suit, you wouldn't happen to have the part number lying about would you? I've read a little about the ignition timing (plus that resistor mod), here in Australia the best petrol - sorry, gas - we can get is 98RON. I think America uses the MON system, and I believe that 98RON is about 92MON - someone correct me if I'm wrong! The supercharger idea sounds good, but then as Jim said I'd have to get the manifolds to suit. Even if these cost me $1000 from Mercedes, I'd still be doing well (if I could get the blower for $600). Do you have any contact details for Renntech, or their homepage or something? If you do, I'll give them a call and ask `em about the carbon fibre intake you described. Jason: I was planning on doing that anyway, I've driven a stock 2.3-16 and one with a straight-through exhaust (2.5" from the extractors back, high-flow cat, single muffler). Obviously, the car with the different exhaust is quite a bit quicker and sounds great, too. Sure, it's louder, but the exhaust note sounds great. I'd have to keep the catalytic convertor because of EPA regulations here, though; but I should be able to get one that's a lot less restrictive than the stock one. |
