Looks like the crank throw arrangement is skewed.

That didn't take very long. Haven't taken the bottom apart but it seems like the #1 rod is broken. Its a heart breaker, its the only Cosworth customer we have. I completely redid the head and timing drive about 15K ago. The customer beats the hell out of it and it finally gave up, unfortunately the condition of the car doesn't warrant repair.

I'm really interested to know why the cossies have (relatively) frequent rod failures. They use the exact same rods as the M103 and M104 3.0/3.2 which can be seen elsewhere just getting the crap beat out of them, with seemingly few rod failures. The M102's, however suffer extensively with failures in the neck of the con rods.

I4 a bit more vibration then the I6, higher RPM, more stress with manual transmission....

The 102 has a bigger bore and I assume a heavier piston to go with it as well.

The vibration part I suspect you are correct on. The M104's can live at 7k without much fuss which is the 2.3's Factory redline. Not sure about the manuals, a multitude of the boosted cars here are/were manuals. Although I could buy this if a large portion of the failures was either on engine hold back, or on over rev (no idea).

This I think is closer, or another part of the picture.

More than that if you can keep it from knocking.

Turbo-ing is easier on rods. Typically the highest load on the rod is at the end of the exhaust stroke as the piston reverses direction and starts back down. This wants to pull the rod apart, esp at higher RPMs. Backpressure from a turbo actually cushions the piston as its rising on the exhaust stroke taking away a little of the strain on the rod as it reverses back down the hole.

With the choke of a snail I have bolted on mine, it should never break a rod. I wouldn't be too surprised if I bent one eventually though.
