Can someone diagnose this problem for me?

Guys, it had been about a week or so that for some reason, when I drove my 90 300E, it would start shaking above the speed of around 50 mph. It started out rather lightly, but noticably strange.

I asked some friends and they said that maybe I had hit a curb and lost my alignment. Another friend said I was having a problem with my rear axle.

Anyway, within the last few days it got alot worse and much more noticeable. Like I could feel and hear something "moving" from the back of my car when I put the car into reverse. Right about now, the car would start shaking violently as if it was about to blow up past the speeds of 30-40mph.

So I was planning on taking it to the mechanic sometime this week when I found time. Then yesterday, I was at a red light right next to my college when a rice rocket pulled up next to me and started looking. I dropped the car into 2nd and floored it instinctively, forgetting about all the problems the car was having. Right there I heard something just go "CRACK" and I stopped. Luckily, I was right next to the parking lot and managed to pull into a parking spot. But, after that, with the slighest touch of the pedal, I heard and felt something strange from the back axle. The car will literally not move right now.

So anyways, those are the syptoms. Can someone diagnose whats wrong with the car and estimate how much its gona cost to fix it? I don't know that much about cars, so Im going with the assumption that the rear axle is messed up and needs to be replaced as I was told by friends. My dad says that he wants an estimate on how much it would cost to fix it before he fixes it, considering that the car is not worth that much and has already had tranny problems.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks

Yep sounds like doc said the axle went snap crackle pop. Go look underneath the rear of your car with a light and you should see something dangling around . DO NOT get onderneath there with someone running the car in gear. Seen an axle come loose on a rack one time and take out 2 windows in other cars . ( thank god it wasnt our shop)
