Do SKL's count?
Hi - I am new to this site and a fairly new (1 year) MB owner. The last thing I want to do is an etiquette screw up my first week here. Does SLK conversation belong in the SL forum, or do the SL owners see the SLK owners as wanna-be's?
At least we don't have to build a shed for our hardtop. Jim '99 SLK 230 - silver/black - 36,000 mi. |

Hi Jim,
I'm quite happy to chew the fat here over these delectable machines. There's also a very active forum for SLK's at http://www.benzworld.org/forums/forums/forum-view.asp?fid=26 Though I can't recall any other SLK owners on this forum, so we might end up a circle of two. Ken Silver -------------- ~1993 SL500, glistening triple black, xenons: http://www.kensilver.com/SL ~1999 SLK 230 Kompressor, silver/black leather, CD, immaculate (my wife's) ~1999 Suzuki Grand Vitara. black & silver ~1991 Daimler, shiny grey/grey leather, best in country! ~ex 350SL, 230E, 280E, MX5 and a lot of other makes not nearly as nice.

Sure! We'll welcome SLK owners with open arms...but SKL owners need to seek a different forum! :p

I saw the engine out of one of those things over at my favorite junkyard the other day, and I was duly impressed. The supercharger is about the same size as the engine. Given the low weight, those little rollerskates must fly. I wonder if I can fit that thing in my 83 280SL?

You are welcome to the forum, of course. And hopefully you will eventually ditch the SLK and and get a SL instead
As much as most believe, SLK is not built on the same platform as the SL, nor the car is anywhere relate to one another. It has more resemblance of a C-Class. The concept of the SLK orginates from the 190SL, a sibling of the 300SL of the '50s, for the less fortunate of that era but still wanted to drive around in a 3-pointed star drop top. SLK is the modern day MB's attempt to attrack younger generation to its line of drop top. As the Car Magazine (England) once stated, the "new money go for the SLK, and the old money stay with the SL". Guess that pretty much sums it up. We are all MB enthusiasts, so welcome to the forum.

The SLK is certainly welcome in my books, but curiously absent (or quiet) in this forum. We've had an SLK in the family for seven years now, the present one 4 and a half and it's been a great little car. over 56k miles it has never missed a beat. I love the design, the performance, and the simple pointy handling; the build quality is good, too.

When most people join the forum, they start a thread about a vehicle ailment! Most threads I've seen started by SLK owners involve problems with their OTHER Mercedes-Benz!

Thanks guys!
I am glad to have found such an active board for Merc owners. I am happy to hear that SLK's in general don't break - broken Mercedes get expensive quickly.
It is my wife that drives our SLK most of the time as well. I have a long commute to work and would rack up the miles too quickly - At least I get it on the weekends! elau: I would have liked to get an SL to begin with, but a good one was a little more than I wanted to spend. I am also not too crazy about the two tops and I am happy to see that the SL's have now followed suit and have the fold up in the trunk deal like the SLK's. Maybe someday...... Thanks for the info regarding the platform - I knew it was not based on the SL, and I did think it was probably a C-class take off because of that god-awful hatchback thing they are passing of which is about the same size as the SLK. My SLK is quick, but not super quick. It drives like it is much bigger than it actually is and have a nice feel, but it does not come off as a real performance machine. The recirculating ball steering does not help with the performance feel (Is this sloppy sedan set up in all MB cars?) but the ride is civilized and comfortable and it is certainly quick enough to be fun. It is nice to meet you all! Jim |

Jim65,
With today's price, you can pick up a good one for about what you paid for the SLK. Glad you still have the car for the weekend. I love the soft/hard top combo. That means I have three cars in one - topless, softtop, and coupe. I can change my car style according to my mood
