HELP: The lid on the passenger side of my '91 300 SL will not stay open. The driver's side works fine but not the passenger side. Would appreciate any advice as to what is needed to correct this problem. Thanks

The door compartment lids close automatically on my 1990 300SL...I think they should close automatically (there is a spring attached to the lid to make sure that it closes).

Is it possible that your drivers' side door compartment lid is not working properly?

greetingz,

My 1991 does the same thing (except on the driver's side). It was working fine one day, then I heard a snap and it went limp from then on. I'm sure it was the spring that broke and now, the lid is starting to come loose from the door panel. I believe the lid can be replaced separetly (at least it appears as a separate part in the diagram). I'm sure the whole door panel must come off to replace it (which looks like a bit of an ordeal...but 'doable'). I just haven't had the time to tackle it yet. I still need to confirm it's a separate part that is replacable (and get a price). Have you found out anything yet?

Exclamation CAREFULL!!

There are (TWO) springs inside this door assembly which are shaped like an S .... The door is made to stay open...AND the spring pressure is to keep the door tightly (snug) closed, so as not to rattle. These hinges do not come as a separate part and cost $385.00 each side. It comes with the leather armrest. Some after market places are asking over $500 per side.
The inside trim most come off completely to gain access to the screws which hold the door pocket and cover on. To remove this I would need a lot more space to explain, but I will if you need it. I am very picky and I have done this.

PS

As I read the other replies I thought of something.... If the springs are working as in holding the door closed it may be best to leave this alone... Sometimes if you open this door too far it will cause the springs to 'jump-out' of there perspective holders rendering them useless. In some instances the weather/old age causes the leather to shrink and possibly be tight when in open position by rubbing against the perforated door panel. Thus 'forcing' it to the extreme open position (which would make it stay open) could cause the springs to come out of there holders. Again leading to the compromise that if the doors are spring-loaded when closed then maybe it's best left alone as this is the most used position
I would be glad to step you through the repair proceedure if you'd like
