Ceramic brake and rotor questions
I have a 2000 SL500 with 25K miles that I drive daily to work, etc.
At some point I would like to go with Ceramic brakes. Here are my questions. 1) Is it suggested that I do both front and rear brakes? 2) Which is the better pad and why? Front pad pricing? a. Akebono b. Mintex c. Porterfield d. Hawk e. Bosch 3) How should these brakes be broken in? 4) Do I need to have the rotors turned when replacing present pads? 5) If I go with new rotors would I be better off with slotted vs. flat surface? I have the AMG Monoblock rims.

i have experience with the hawks that tire rack sells. they are very nice. do change front and rear together. the ceramics produce a lot more friction. if you just change the fronts in wet driving you will be locking up the fronts. at least i did. as far as rotors go i would treat the situation the same as if the pads were conventional. if the rotors have plenty of thickness i would use them. if they are thin or warped i would replace them.
no experience with any rotors except oem. tom w

Don't know of anyone who recommends slotting or drilling except for racing app's.

I would agree that drilled rotors are probably best suited for racing. Why do you suppose MB put them on the 2002 Silver Arrow's?

On the Porsche forums you see a lot of guys upgrading brakes when they chip the motor. In every case they say it is a waste of money. The stock brakes work great and have way more HP than the motor does. The only time you need upgraded brakes is for racing or track use where you have REPETITIVE hard braking and fade is a problem.
If you stomp on the brakes, do they lock up (I guess answer is no if you have ABS). If they do lock up you have a tire traction problem. Actually going to a stickier tire first would tell you a lot and could save a lot of money. Also the P car guys waste money by upgrading the rears too when they get a low percentage of the braking force. Having ceramics in front and regular in rear would probably throw a wrench into how to proportion the brakes between front and rear. You will increase stopping force but in reality you probably don't need it, and never see it.
