1980 450 SL Injection

I have a 1980 450 SL that had been sitting for 7 years. Since I have started to resore it I have drained and cleaned the gas tank. Put new injectors, wires, cap, rotor, fuel pump and filter in the car. It still doen't run correctly as it doesn't have enough power and it seems to miss or flutter. Compression is good and it also has new plugs. To make it run even reasonably well I must advance the timing around 30 degrees. It starts well just doesn't run well. Any Ideas?

Did you put in new injector o-rings around the sleaves? You might shoot some carb cleaner around the injectors to see if the RPM's pick up indicating an air leak.

I have a 1980 450SL that was a real dog when I got it. It turned out that the OVP relay on the side panel by the passenger was kaput and there was no power to the brain box that ran the fuel injection. It was running on the limp home feature.

With the engine running and the air cleaner off try listening for a buzzing sound on the fuel frequency gizmo on the drivers side of the engine between the injector body and the head cover. It is a long tubular looking thing that is connected to the injector body and has an electrical connection coming out of it in a Y configuration. I usually use a screwdriver as a hearing aid. If it is working you will hear a loud buzzing sound. If the relay is dead you might hear a slight buzzing from the fuel pump.

Good luck!

I have the same problem with my 1980 450Sl, and I think it may be the vacuum system but I'm not sure.
I'll try to check my vacuum system out this weekend and let you know if that's the problem.
