1987 560 sl foghorn-type noise, brake resistance
OK - I'm a newbie here, so please be patient.
I have a new-to-me 1987 560sl with 39,000 miles. I have noticed that when I first start the car and put it in reverse, I hear a noise in the passenger-side dashboard area that sounds like a muffled foghorn. When this noise occurs, and I am pressing on the brake, the brakes seem to push back. Any ideas? |

Sounds like a vacuum leak, or maybe a problem with the ABS actuator?

Hi There
Try it with the bonnet (sorry, hood your side of the pond) open and see if the noise is from there. It might help see what's causing it. Odd that it's only in reverse, if it had been the ABS I would have thought that it would happen in any drive? cheers Jim

Just a thought, but the steering linkage idler arm has a rubber bushing in it that makes that sound when worn, telegraphs through the floor/dash sheet metal to that area behind the dash. Nothing to do with brakes or reverse though, but if you turn the steering wheel while moving, it does this.

I have found that the first time I depress my brakes, they act strangely from the ABS, but ok after that. One of these days, I'm going to clean the ABS sensors, which are slightly magnetic and can pick up rotor dust over time.
