Need Help -rims/tires

I have a 2000 SL500. I currently have 19" rims, and don't like them. I am thinking of going back to original 17", however I am worried they may look too small. Do any of you have experience with either 17" or 18 " and would like to share your opinions. I really would appreciate your input. If I go with either 17" or 18" should I do staggered ? Maybe that will help, the look and fill the wheel wells.

I've got 17s, and they're fine but look like they would have been standard equipment from 90-on. The cars looks pretty much perfect with 18s. Can't attest to ride quality though...
