odometer gears, what tooth count to order?

Hi, I felt ambious and pulled out my instrument cluster and sure enough the odometer gears were bad the amber one was cracked in two and the black one was disscintegrated. I want to order a new set but where are they coming up with a 12 tooth number? The amber color one has as best as I can tell 51 and the other gears are also alot more than 10 or 12. Also how does the clear plexiglass come off to gain access to the front of my gas gauge cluster? The shinney round button came unglued in the middle. Thanks!

Odometer Repair: Tutorial - Mercedes-Benz Forum

Remove the gauge cluster just like you removed the speedo assembly.

Follow the tutorial that Rowdie posted.

But here is your answer....
E1 should be 12 teeth.
E2 should be 48 X 12
E3 should be 48 X ??>>>>>>>>this is the important tooth count. Could be 12, 13, 15, 16, 17 or 18 teeth.

If you post the year and model of your SL perhaps someone having that same car could tell you what was in theirs...

If you cannot count the teeth on the main gear then count the teeth of the next gear that it meshes with. If your tooth count is 39=48x21, 41=48x19, 42=48x18, 43=48x17, 44=48x16, 45=48x15, 46=48x14, 47=48x13, 48=48x12
