500 Sl Keyless Remote System

I have a friend that needs who just recently purchased a 95 500SL and the remote keyless entry system does not operate. Is there a way he can check to see whether it is his KEY or the system. Whenever he pushes the buttom on the key nothing happens. He must lock and unlock the car via the key.

I realize this may seem like a stupid answer, but always try the obvious first, does his keyless system have a good battery in it? I just had to have mine replaced ( lost in New Orleans during Mardi Gras and they shipped me the new one batteryless. They only needed my VIN number to synch it to my car.

How much did the replacement cost? I had two when we purchased the car used, and one of them didn't work. Put fresh batteries in both, and it still did not work. Recently, the other one gave out too. So now we have two remotes that are not operational!

I got only the round head key with my 1990 500SL, I think it is the valet key because it only opens the driver's door and starts the ignition. I would like to know if I can get the master key with the remote and from where (any dealer)?

I just replaced my stock remote key ('91 500SL). I ordered it through Caliber Motors. So, any dealer can help you, it's just that Caliber sells wholesale to the public. All they needed was proof of who I was and the VIN. The key came pre-cut for my car, but I had to go through a simple process to sinc the electronic part in the key to my car. By the way, I replaced my stock key not because it was dead, but because I wanted the key ring loop that the earlier model keys don't have (now I can attach the key to a key ring). This new one is a bit smaller too.

I was able to get a replacement master (keyless) setup + the post - key from the dealer (at a cost of about 220 ) they through in an extra stick key ... they had to send to Penn. to get it made. The locksmith says he could make the key ( special laser cutter) but without the chip in the head the car won't start. My dealer wanted to see my title (and the VIN #). Nice to see they believe in security. I'dd sure hate to have someone drive off with my car for 240 dollars , or worse take it out for joy rides when I'm not home, or at work....

Back on the original subject, my manual says you can check for the transmit by holding the button down for 3 seconds, the light behind the red shield will blink on if it is working, sure enough it does blink, I just tried it.

Tempremental

Well, these things can get tempremental. Assuming the key blinks every three seconds, the lock can still "forget", though I do not know why. Your manual has a section on what to do when you install new batteries. Somthing like pushing the button, then operating the lock within 10 seconds with the "real" key. It then remembers, though mine seems to forget about once a month, for reasons unknown.

Replaced batteries in primary remote this weekend and followed instructions in manual for reprogramming. Worked flawlessly. Wife is once again happy now that she has keyless entry back!!

Now to find the OTHER remote...

locked out

is this the same for the 90 300SL? I currently get a response from the door indicators....extended blinking if you will....but no lock or unlock...not even the vacuum noises that usually accompany the process...AND my keys...all of them...do not work manually...something about broken piece in the lock itself...so, you guessed it....I am locked out of my car. I CAN however open the trunk with the post key...does my remote need to be reprogrammed? My manual is...you guessed it again...LOCKED IN THE CAR....what to do???
