K-Jet MASSACRE in 83 Euro 280SL

Hey all,

First post over here, I’ve been on the diesel boards for my W123s for 15 years but this I have to share.

I posted in classified looking for a replacement part but had to show you guys this lunacy.

I’m working on a clients 83 euro 280SL (M110.990) suffering from rough and erratic idle, stalling, no low end shift..because there’s no fuel getting delivered under 2500 rpm.

Long story short… opened up the k jet to clean as the sensor plate was sticky and looks like a PO tried to clean this with a rotary tool or a jackhammer or mallet and rock. (Maybe trying to “smooth” out that hairline?)

Lord almighty.

Are those cracks, or just casting lines?

Yes, i meant casting line!

I may have some serious egg on my face here- Is this model meant to have the rubber boot that covers the entire bottom of the sensor? I thought those were KE only.

https://www.oldtimerparts.us/shop/mercedes/mercedes-k-jetronic-rubber-boot-intake-w201-w102-w461-intake-boot-1021411090/

I'm just a simple diesel gal, please help.

(I rebuilt the k-jet for my husbands Porsche (924), but his doesn't have the boot over the bottom portion, so I'm not a total k jet idiot...just might be right now)

The air guide (the part that you displayed) for the M110 engines is aluminum. What you have is it.

Thank you, my inexperience with these is showing…

Am I wrong in thinking this damage is impacting performance so dramatically? Is it primarily scratches in the upper body that cause these issues?

I thought I had the issues pinpointed…

I really appreciate your help.

Neither the casting flaws, as supplied by Mother Benz, nor the "improvements" via tomahawk, will have any discernible effect on engine operation.

Begin by adjusting the valves, and then testing the compression.
Next insure that the ignition system is in top condition.
Only then can the fuel system be evaluated.

Thank you so much for your time.

My issue with the k jet is that it isn’t really moving until the car is floored, extremely low idle, lugging and stalling, basically major fuel delivery issues until revved quite high (both in the shop and on the road)- but if I depress the sensor plate slightly it runs like a dream. No misfires, no lugging. Steady power at low RPMs finally(before it was either 800 or 2200~. No in between.

Any advice you have with this in mind would be great.

Thank you so much…avoiding all CIS in future…

1) If the car is in the US, has it been Federalized to include exhaust O2 feedback control of mixture?

2) Try making an enrichment adjustment to the main mixture screw in the amount of 1/8 turn clockwise.
