1st time and glad to be here
Hi everybody. I had been casually shopping for a 72-73 107 for almost 2 years and purchased a 73 1 month ago. I have been reading this site for a long time and find it quite informative. Have had a lot of fun reading the Dear Abby post. OK so here's some of my thoughts.
The car that a person wants should make them feel good when they drive it. It's that simply. If it doesn't, sell it. I picked the 107 because it has to be one of the most beautiful classic designs in an automobile ever. Mine had 171,000 miles on it when I picked it up. I put 2,500 on in 4 days driving it back to Minnesota from California. It ran great and didn't use a drop of oil. The things that are just a plus for me since I've had it are the "nice car" comments that I get from everybody from 16 to 76, male and female. Not bad for a 30yr old car. My non MB mechanic points out things on the car and says "This is a machine". He is as excited about the SL as I am. I don't think there is any "snob" factor here. Just passion for the SL. Remember, enjoy what you drive. Thanks Mark |

I just stumbled across this board last week myself. I've searched for something similar on and off again for nearly three years now and finally found something! Anyone know how long this forum has been around? Kuddos to those who set it up and maintain it.

Glad to see new members on board. This forum is FULL of information and maintains several "experts" in the field. Members are very willing to share their knowledge and passion for the marque. Welcome..... and enjoy!

4NDELIT - Thanks for the welcome. My car is a 107.044 1973 model yr 450sl. Red with black leather (new). A mercedes garage thought the transmission might have been worked on but felt nothing has ever been done to the engine. I am 47 and have had a few "collectable" cars, but have not enjoyed any of them as much as this one.

Welcome,
I am glad that you are enjoying your SL. I too, have had a couple of collectables, at least to me. I bought my SL in May and have had a great summer with it. It has been fun to "tinker with" and a joy to drive. I took it to one all German car show; I learned a lot and the people were great to talk with. BD

I guess I'm the "spoiled brat" of the group... I'm 18 and this is my second car [first was an Audi 5000 cs quattro] I found this board after weeks of looking for a good board that knows old SL's.

Hi -- I wanted to chime in because I found this late last week and have just poured over the information here -- thanks to everyone for the great info. I just bought a 1986 560SL with 48K miles -- it is "just lovely" to quote one of my friends and has been a joy to drive.
Best regards to all! |

Nice thread here, I have never owned an SL, but I have a awesome 108 4.5, that turned 30 this year. My friend of almost 27 years has a first class Mercedes Shop here in So Cal. I have driven many SL's, and the oldest 107 serviced there is owned by great female customer that, I think was his first. This 350SL has over 750,000 miles on her, painted once, maintained to the max. She has been a friend for many years, and I had the pleasure to drive this car last July.
Awesome!
