Just a further comment. The most frustrating thing about these is the lengths you have to go to get repairs done. The dealers told me "that cars older than most of my mechanics, so they dont know too much about it.". Well it seems to me that the car's has been around longer than most all mercedes on the road today. They should have a plethora of information available to the mechanics after 20 years of servicing them. I love the look of the car, but you all have to admit, everything with them is a struggle and a puzzle. Just read the message board. Again if this is a hobby, or if you just enjoy being on the board and swapping advice etc, then its a wonderful thing. And its fine to spend a little cash to keep it in shape and running, BUT it should not be a constant river of cash.

Back to JUMPING?
Lynn
I just cannot help my self from asking. I said in an earlier post that a timing chain would be nearly out of the question for the jumping problem. The Mercedes rep said it woud be the timing chain. Why were the fuel pump and distributer replaced? Did they what was wrong with those parts?

Anyone who buys a 20+ year old vehicle without researching access to reliable mechanics and parts pretty much gets what they deserve i.e., unexpected problems.
Time to quit whining and move on although its been fun. |

Mercedes Maintenance
Well, I was going to rant on about your sl sob story but I decided it might sound too patronizing.
I will just stick to the point. Sounds like you should't own a Luxury auto and that you have sour grapes.

Holey Moley! Lynn sure has taken a LOT of abuse from the people on this thread. She asked for help, went through one helluva time both with her car and the opinions offered, and she still kept coming back to this site. Mostly sane and still friendly in the end. I have to give her a lot of credit and respect.

I agree, she has taken a lot of abuse- I won't speak for Lynn, but she keps coming back, seeming to enjoy the repartee.
This thread has been the most entertaining one I have read in a LONG time! This thing just keeps evolving... As she mentioned in a previous thread, she's a big a girl and can take it as well as she gives it back. It will be interesting to see how the trip from Alabama went- well I hope! |

To answer a few questions.. first of all Im a guy, not a girl lol. FineoleBenz, actually they changed all of these parts because they just didnt know what the problem was. Im kind of glad because they would have had to be replaced eventually anyway. Gilbert who said I shouldt own a luxury car, plz see pics of my Infiniti FX45 to see what a luxury card looks like. For Bowbyeal Im not whining. Im expressing disappointment in the quality of the vehicle. This is a forum, and I thought that meant expressing opinions. Im sorry if you dont like mine. Anyway I drove the car to DC from Birmingham yesterday and was very impressed. I drove through snowy mountain roads where other cars were skidding off the road, and surprisingly the sl whizzed right through. My tires are brand new so maybe that helped. The car does run great. No more jumping, great acceleration. I drove straight through for 15 and a half hours , and it ran great the whole way. the only problem I have now is a little play in the steering wheel that I didnt have before. It didnt have this before they did all of the repair so I probably need to have this checked. Any suggestions on the easiest way to go about this? Thanks for all of you advise. Again I am impressed by the drivability in the snow and ice.

My appoloies for the gender, I guess the FX45 threw me off... kidding!
It is very interesting that the SL did so well in the snow. I know that MB took extra measures to distribute weight evenly to affect better handling, I guess that would translate in snow as well. Tires do make a big difference also, so with both its a win win. My 560SL has play in the steering as well and my mech mentioned that a new steering box would be the solution. My car has 145k, so that may be the reason my steering box is worn. They can tighten the steering box with an adjustment, but that is a quick and temporary fix and not recommended. The box will have to be replaced. (my question is: why put the adjuster there at all if its not a good idea to use it?). Anyway, I priced this out and its around $1k w/labor etc. My guess is that You probably notice the play now that everything else is working well. The engine issue you were having was, I am sure, very distracting- probably made you not want to drive the car at all. The play in the wheel, atleast with my SL, is really only noticeable when driving straight. When I am cornering its not an issue. Glad to hear your trip went well, we can all exhale now. |

Im actually starting to like the car a little better now. I ll check the box you mentioned. Its really very minor, but you're right, now that everything else is perfect, Im noticing it. Im still selling in the spring though.

Bye the way, you drove through snow and slush and probably a lot of salt and sand- WASH IT THOROUGHLY QUICK AND STORE IT!!
No more driving it this year! (too bad because it does handle so well in the snow...) |
