Those are 16", but on at least two production runs
of the 15" X 7", ET 16 type which were manufactured for AMG by ATS the spokes go all the way out to the bead seats on the outside rather than ending at the drop centers. I've got 7 of the 15", and even among these there are variations: the set of four marked as produced in late 1984 have much deeper drop centers (easier to mount tires, but may not clear the brakes on later models), and therefore smaller holes between the spokes than the three that are early 1985 production, but they are marked with the same number: 7 40 0039.

I really like these wheels! Now I want a set for my W126!
![]() ![]() But the wheels in the first pic are shot, it would make a decent spare. Who the heck curbs wheels that badly?

Darn! You guys are tempting me to put my white set
up for sale -- they're just like the ones in MTI's picture, except better condition, but I think I need to keep the center caps for my three chrome ones. Is anyone driving past Williamsburg soon with $400. in their pocket?

It took awhile, but the old Pentas (15x7 ET16) are getting refurbished. I decided to see if it was a potential DIY, so out came the aircraft stripper
Spray and wait a minute or two . . . With the pressure washer at the ready . . . Under the white paint and clearcoat . . . silver paint and clearcoat! The aircraft stripper did get to the clearcoat over the silver paint, but it did give me a pretty good idea of how the wheels would look after refinishing. The machined lips were also clearcoated, but all had corrosion underneath them, so removing that would be necessary. Given the relatively good condition under the paint and aluminum corrosion, it looks like a media blasting of the wheels should take care of most of the issues. Stay tuned. |

Anywhere that sells automotive paint supplies. If the wheels need repair or if you're going to media blast them anyway, you don't have to strip the paint/clearcoat, since that will take care of all coverings. If the wheels are in good shape, then the aircraft stripper will make fast work of the painted wheels. One large can took care of 4 rims. Wear gloves and eye protection when spraying or brushing it on, it will burn skin. In addtion to paint and clearcoat, you'll need the appropriate primer.

Genuine r9's sighted on a w123 300TD, but it was in
Oslo, just outside the Folk Culture Museum, about a block from the Viking ship archaeological display building. Actually, I'm not sure that w123 wagon was a diesel -- it may have been a 280TE or any of a number of other choices offered to the lucky Europeans. In Stavanger, I saw a W123 wagon whose hatch seemed to read "200TD".
You haven't had to put up with my postings for 15 days or so because I was combining professorial duties with visits to in-laws in Stockholm, Stavanger, and several sites between. |
