Cool spoke/wire rims on 84 SD?

Hi all,

The first mercedes diesel I ever laid eyes on was a 1984 300SD that some friends of ours have. I fell in love, the rest is history.....

Anyhow, they don't own it, a wealthy friend of theirs "lent" it to them because the were without a vehicle and his wife refused to drive the "old junker" anymore. It is a near-spotless vehicle (or at least was when I saw it last, about 6 months ago, non-operational).

But on with my question, this car has spoked rims (think old lincoln hubcaps) on it, but they aren't fake, they are the real deal! (The spokes hold the car up!!) They even have a two-blade "propeller" on the hub! I love those rims! Did mercedes ever sell an option like that? If not, does anybody know where I could get a set to run in the summer with summer tires on them, my bundt rims are really cruddy.

Thanks!

Several companies have made wires for M-B,

including the American Dayton Wheels (which bolt on, in spite of the decorative "knock-off" spinners) but you should consider the fact that, unless you have the incredibly expensive Rudge wheels with aluminum rim sections, or comparable Ferarri type wheels from Italy, wire wheels are very, very heavy -- even a bit heavier than regular stamped steel wheels and much heavier than factory alloy options. This means that all that extra unsprung weight has a negative effect on some aspects of suspension behavior, especially the ability of standard shocks to control wheel movements, etc. They are best left for those who spend their car time cruising at 30 mph or less, not people who drive M-B cars the way they're meant to be driven.

So then...

So what you are saying is that putting them on will make the car handle like crap? Or something else?

It's just a small step backward, but

many people would notice the difference in wheel bounce, etc., but some might not, especially where the roads are very smooth. Older aftermarket wires are often rather narrow, too.

Arrow so then..

So it's not going to effect handling as much as ride quality? As long as it rides better than a 95 Jeep Grand Cherokee, I won't mind.

I am the only one who drives this car, and I don't have passengers very often, unless it is the whole family, in which case, the car is weighed down considerably (five people onboard.) Therefore, a slightly rougher ride wouldn't bother me too much.
