Wheel Paint Choices

Hi everybody,

I am preparing to paint the bundt wheels on my 1980 W123 and have been doing research on what paint to use. I am looking for a color that matches the original color and of course is a good durable paint. I have come across these products and would like to hear testimonials, good or bad, on them. They are:

Duplicolor HWP101 Silver with HWP103 Clear
Duplicolor T178 (which I read is replaced by Duplicolor Perfect Match BGM0535) with clearcoat
Wurth Silver Wheel Lacquer paint with Wurth Clear Lacquer
1Z Einszett Silver Wheel Lacquer Paint with Wurth High Gloss Clear Lacquer

If anybody has any other suggestions, I would be happy to hear them. Thanks.

I saw a kit at Mercedes source. Do a search under paint wheels at their website.

Probably not as durable, but might be a lot cheaper and still adequate.

You might consider Eastwood as well.

I have never done a repaint myself (to factory colour, that is) but can tell you from years on various lists that Wurth is recommended as the brand that is an exact match to the factory original.

If you aren't committed to being exact in the colour, then any brand name should be fine. Or look in the yellow pages under auto body supplies (or similar) as paint supplier shops often sell to the public over the counter and will do custom spray cans while you wait.

These places generally have very extensive colour code listings for body, trim and wheels for a wide range of years, so they *should* have a listing for Mercedes bundts.

Do NOT buy rattlecans from a major auto chain as these generally are made to sit for extended periods on the shelf and they don't produce the same quality results.

In terms of the look you will get, the prep is at least 70 percent of the job. Followed by spray technique and a dust-free environment.

Good luck on the project.

Would you happen to have the MB paint code?

Thanks for the input so far. I came across the Mercedes source kit too. The picture shows that it is simply a Rustoleum primer and Duplicolor wheel paint, stuff you can pick up in any hardware and auto parts store. Nothing special.

Eastwood does have a large selection though. Did not think of looking there.

Prep is definitely a big part of it. Thinking about glass bead blasting the wheels first. Have heard different opinions of that, but glass beads are the proper material for soft materials like aluminum, so should be fine. I would prefer an exact match if possible, but any color fairly close is a lot better than what I have know. Been waiting for my tires to bite the dust before painting the wheels, and now the time has come.

The early Bundts were painted with RAL 9700 silver lacquer and the later ( 1972+ ? ) used RAL 9735 Astral Silver.

Wurth is also a good choice !

The duplicolor is holding up well on my 240D and I just picked up two more cans to paint the bundts on my 300D. Unless the car is a show car you can't go wrong as long as you do all the needed prep work and take your time.

Wouldn't you want to powder coat wheels, since they probably take more abuse than any other parts that are painted?

PeachParts - Mercedes Parts & Tech InfoDuplicolor has held up fine for me for about three years. Aircraft stripper is very good to remove the old paint.

If I did this right, a pic is attached of my 30 year old bundts.

VHT Wheel Paint provides a great finish and real protection for all standard and custom wheels. Every day wheels take a beating both on and off the road. Salt, sand, brake dust and rocks severely damage the appearance and protection of the wheel surface. This unique product resists chipping, cracking and fading, while protecting the wheel surface from oxidation, and is available in five popular colors plus clMore often than not, you'll select a shade of white or off-white for the moldings, doors, and windows. If you're feeling brave, consider the palest shade of color to coordinate with the walls. For a really striking look, try lighter walls and dark tones or bright color for trim. ear coat.

I used Wurth and Duplicolor (paint + CC) with great results from both. I'd give Wurth the edge. I was intending a quick job on a set of spares while I refinished the originals properly. So pleased with the quick job I was sorry I hadn't prepped better.

I left them to bake a week in the summer sun and that may have helped.

Looks pretty good. What was your technique/steps taken or this result?
