Which Tire For The Money For My 94' S500?
Which Tire For The Money For My 94' S500?
OK, I've had Michelin MXV4's (HR Rated) and Yokohama Avid V4 (VR Rated). Now pleae tell me what tire is the best road, traveling tire for the money. Has anyone tried the Turanza LS-V or even the Kumho Ecsta HP4 716 at $54.00 per tire??? This seems to be a deal after reading all of the reviews. Please tell me what you think! 94' S500 Thanks!

Tires
I had one of those vibration prone 140s since 94, everyone told me to put on Michelins, and I followed their advice 235 Hs and Vs. I finally on the advice of "Tire Rack" put Torenza LS-H on the car. I had the lower bushings re-done and the tires balanced with a "road- force" balancer. The ride is better than ever, and no vibration. I had concerns about Firestone, but these are made in Japan. Unlike Michelin they also have a wheel stem index dot!
When they were installing them you could see the stiffness compared to the Michelins, which were on only 20K miles. They are also cheaper, My MB dealer says they are seeing them on some cars, the 140 body was propably the heaviest car ever made |

Peter:
Were you getting viberation from both Michelins? Do you remember what you paid for the Bridgestones? How many miles so far on them? Do they handle better that the Michelins?

Bought my 1996 S500 about 6 months back.. it had Michelins on it and had vibration at 45-60 mph. Diagnosis at the first tire place said "balance"... 50 bucks later, I still had the vibration.
Next place said two of the Michelins were out of round and one wheel was not "true". Bought new wheels and mounted 4 Kumho KH11's... that was 10 thousand miles ago... no vibration, excellent in the rain, good wear. These are "W" rated... much more speed rating than you need for your S500... Tire Rack sells these for 59 bucks apiece. I've got Kumhos on several of my cars... they seem fine although I'm no road racer. KenP |

How do the Kumho KH11's handle compaired to the Michelins or any othe tire you have used? How is the wear after 10K?

I had the Kumho's...They were fine for the first 500 miles or so....then they began getting annoyingly noisey. Since they're directionals theres not much you can do about it either. My vote is on the MXV4's.. I've had several sets of these, and they are smoothest , quietest tire I've seen. I am actually running Continetals at the present time, which aren't bad at all especially for the money but they don't seem to last as long as the MXV4's.
Good Luck

Michelins vs Turanza
I encountered vibration problems especially when cold on all Michelins. I tried MXV4s in both H and V ratings.
I got a good price of $532 on the LS-H installed and "road force" balanced, he did not have the MB weights, set the balancer on high sensitivity and even shaved some weights. My local Firestone dealer wanted $660, but did not have the balancer. I have been paying $150 or so for Michelins, more at the dealer, but LS-H go for $114. I would definately check with TIRE-RACK, they also list shops who will accept drop ship from them, and those that have the GSP balancer. That is where I found the shop I used. The "road force" checks the tire for roundness and stiffness, by spinning it against a small wheel, adding weights and then balancing. Most dealers have the machine, but a lot of tire shops dont. |

I've got Bridgestone Turanza's on the E300TD and found they are pretty quiet, very very good in the rain and corner OK. I don't like the little 'lip' on the side wall but they seem to hang well in the corners, it doesn't feel like they are rolling over.

Just saw your note... not sure I'd compare them to the Michelins I had... for two reasons. First, I don't like Michelins. Various problems over the years... wear a long time, but get out of round, etc, etc... so, I'm biased.
Second, the Kumho's drove a lot better... but, to be fair, the Michelins had lots of miles on them (about 75% worn)... the Kumhos were brand new. One poster mentioned the Kumhos are directional. Not true of the KH11s. They have an inside and outside but can be rotated (there is NOT a left and right) I've not had any noise issues after 10 thousand miles... they are as quiet as can be. I won't say they look like new, but wear is not noticeable yet. They are W rated... so, pretty soft rubber... tread wear numbers in the 200's, which is typical for a sticky tire. Bottom line: If I had to replace my tires today, I'd buy another set of KH11s without hesitation. I like them on my S500 Coupe. Hope this helps. KenP |
