Low range question

I have a 98 ml320 and it has 140,000 miles.I just bought it and when I start it up my low range light blinks about 5 times and then it goes away ,so I was wondering if thats the way it supposed to be or it is giving me some kind of message.

I have a facelift 2001 ML so i dont know if the sequence is the same as yours but the ONLY time the low range light comes on is when i select low range the light flashes 3 time and then stays lit (which indicates that i am now in low range).....when i de-select low range the light flashes 3 times and then stays off (indicating that i am NOT in low range. Seems to me that you are indeed getting some kind of message
Hope this helps.

Is your transmission in neutral when you enable low range?

There was a bulletin concerning this problem, especially when the truck is cold. There was a recall campaign on it. Have a dealer do a VMI on the serial number, see if there are any outstanding recalls on the truck.

The recall number is 1998060001. The transfer case control module is replaced with part # 163 545 01 32 at no change.

I'm confused between your first post and last one. When you start it up, does the low range light blink without pressing any button, or are you trying to put it in low range? Or are the first post and last post both correct? I think you need to get the trouble codes read out for the low range system.

In that case I'd mainly concentrate on getting the fault codes read out in the low range control module, and also see if the recall campaign was done for the low range control unit. If it hasn't been done, it would still be a freebie......More than likely there is a fault though, usually it needs a low range motor, not much else to the system, just the switch and control unit, which just makes sure you engage the low range only when MB allows it.

Maybe "recall campaign" was the wrong words to use, this actually I believe was a "service campaign", not an actual recall, they are a bit different. I'd go with what MB has on VMI, not to discredit the site you used, but it may not list a "service campaign" item like this. Even if it WAS done, MB actually changed the part number of that control module later on (about 3 months after the campaign was initiated), there were some repeat concerns with the first replacement version they had us install. And in any case it seems like it needs the trouble codes read out for the problem with it NOT going in to low range, even the ones we had where you actually had the low range light blinking on cold-start, they still went into low range if you wanted them to, so you've got a couple different things going on. If that campaign wasn't done, maybe that'll fix both problems, but I rather doubt it.

You have to have the gear shift lever in neutral for low range to engage, did you do this?

With the car in neutral, engine running, you press the low range button. The light should come on indicating you are in low range. Low range sends all the trans output through a gear reduction of about 2.3 to 1 to multiply your power in off road, heavy pulling conditions. Once the light comes on, put the car in gear and drive it. Be careful with the throttle because the car will literally jump to 6ooo plus rpm and compression braking will be severe. You will note that top speed in all gears is severely reduced.
