1999 ML430 Tires

OK...I know this has been beat to death......kinda' like oil preferences......

But.....

I am rapidly approaching 250,000 miles on my ML and am looking to put some fresh rubber on her. Currently have 275/55/17 Bridgestone Dueler HP that have done well and now have 49,000 miles on'm.....Here are my choices:

1. Michelin Cross Terrains 275/60/17 drive-out price $812.00

2. Bridgestone Dueler HL 275/55/17 drive-out price $792.00

As you can see prices are comparable.I am leaning towards the Michelins, but I am a little leary of the 60 height. (the reason I chose these is their price, MUCH cheaper because it is a common size, the 275/55/17 is kinda' oddball and therefore more expensive).

Just looking for any information to sway me one way or the other.

Thanks !!

How do these $800+ tires compare with the tires that cost $500? I was looking at the BFG and Goodyear, are they good? For 275/60/17, it's like $100 per piece... I have used, in my other cars, tires that cost $300 a piece, but still don't give too much more performance compared to the $150 a piece...

Is there really a big difference?
I've owned P-Zero Sym & Asymm...
Yoko Advan Series...
Goodyear Integrity...
Nitto's... all seem to be quite similar but a bid difference in price...

any insight?

you can also do 255/60/17, it has the same diameter as the 275/55/17, you may have slight improvement on the gas mileage too.

Springfever, I did alot of research before I went with the Bridgestone Dueler HL Alenza. I have 11,000 miles on them and little wear. Things to consider are the temperature ratings and wear (UTQG). They are rated at AA and 600, which to me is excellent for this tire size. Check tirerack and compare a few tires, I'm sure you will see the difference. If you read reviews compare apples with apples and look at the vehicle the respondant is rating. I had the Dunlop Grandtreks, which in my opinion were junk. The Bridgestones are far superior to the Dunlops. The tire has an aggressive look and good performance; snow traction is excellent. Also, as of this post the price is $150 per tire and alot of places do price matching. Happy hunting!

Baby's got new shoes !!

Decided on the Michelin Cross-Terrains and I had them mounted this morning.
Nothing like a new set of tires to improve handling and feel ! Ened up getting them at Kauffman Tire for $755.00 drive/out. I actually like the 60 Series better than the 55's. ..fills up the wheel-wells and sits just a shade higher.

Had them mounted with the Blackwalls OUT.....White Relief Lettering IN...............they look great !!

Next up is an oil change and full detail at the BIG 250K.........!!!!

I have just fitted Michelin Diamaris 275/55/17 to my ML 270 CDI and found them the best yet - I had a set of Pirelli Zeros in the same size prior and was disapppointed with them.

My 2c.

Hankook Ventus

I put the Hankook Ventus tires on my ML430, and they not only handle and ride great, but have excellent performance on wet roads. I don't know about treadwear yet because I've only put about 4K on them, but so far so good performance-wise.

General Grabber UHP

I put on a set of General Grabber UHP 275/55/17 and I am happy with them. They cost $125 a tire discounted. They have an agressive look to them but are relatively quiet on the highway. Excellent wet weather traction. Tire specs are Treadwear-360, A A.

What is the Current Thinking?

I'll be getting new tires on my ML430. Typical highway suburban use, no off road, Northeast climate.

What is the current thinking? (The comments on here are over a year old.)

I'm looking for good ride and good grip in the rain & snow, and willing to spend a little extra to get it.

Thanks
Al

Hankook Ventus after 20K miles

These tires are holding up very well; vehicle gets >99% road/interstate use. Good mileage on ML430 (16.5 in town/20 highway). I would buy these again especially for the price.

General Grabber ST's are great. The wear is not the best (30-35k per set), but they grip great in all conditions, are quiet, and you can't beat the price. I am on my second set.

Talking Also like General Grabbers

I have these on my 99 ML320 and they perform very well and a set doesn't cost $800 .... more like $450 or so. To each his own however.
