Arrow Sprinter Engine Transplant Options?

My business has a 2004 Dodge Sprinter that just bent a rod at about 350K miles. Have only owned it about a year, and I do not know how diligent prior owner was with preventative maintenance.

I was quoted prices beginning at $5600 parts + $1000 labor to replace.

My question – what would be a suitable transplant candidate?

No way I can afford to spend $6600 to get this running again...

I entered the VIN on the Russian website, and this is what it shows for engine entries:

Engine 647981 50 866079

engine OM602 de29la 75KW (102 ps) 3400 rpm (с 24.01.1997)

So is it an OM602 or 647?

Does the info above tell you anything useful?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

It's an OM647.

Thanks Kent

Do you know if a 617 turbo could be transplanted into this vehicle?

Highly unlikely....its already a tight fit with the OM647.

You bought a van with a 300k engine but can't afford to replace it with the proper engine?

Why not source a used OM647 with lower miles? I'm sure they are out there...

Also, a 617 would be WAY underpowered to push that huge van around....it only has 125hp!! The OM647 has around 180, and a lot more torque.

Red face

The Sprinter came as part of the purchase of the business. My business partner is the "operations" guy, and I thought he had things evaluated. Me bad.

Anyway, of the purchase price, only about 10 grand was allocated to the vehicle. So spending 60-120% of that for a repair is ridiculous.

Don't know exactly how bad the condition of the current engine is. I'll have to try and get in touch with the mechanic...

And I'll have to start scouting out used OM647's. If you have any specific ideas, I'm all ears...

And thanks for the background info on the engines. I'm still pretty much a beginner.
