Since none of youse guys could help me, I had to look elsewhere for help.
Called my favorite indy (Imports Plus -- Irmo, SC <-- great people) and luckily for me, the Free Advice Counter was open. Service advisor David was pretty sure the glass is bonded to the metal channel with some sort of adhesive. He suggested I go to a glass shop. Great idea!
So I went to Sheperd's Glass in West Columbia, SC (also great people) and a young man examined the innards of my door and concluded a urethane adhesive would do the trick. $12 and some change later, I was on my way with a tube of Dow Betaseal U-418 Quick Cure Primerless Auto Glass Urethane Adhesive.
When I got home, I filled the metal channel as best I could considering the limited accessibility and then firmly seated the glass and put the window all the way up. My glass friend said leave it undisturbed overnight. I waited two full days and it now seems to work perfectly. Put the inner door back on and all is well.
