The 406/416 are going to be out of your original price range. There is nothing wrong with a 404 though. For the price they can not be beat. They generally have quite low miles and most where over maintained by the european militaries they served. The best examples are generally the Swiss versions. Like the other guys mentioned, most 404s are soft tops. I have a 416 hardtop and agree with Greg, a soft top sure would be nice . The vast majority of 404s are gas powered. Power is a relative thing in the mog so don't get all caught up in those numbers. They are all slow, even my 5.7L diesel 416 is only 110hp.

I bought a 416 for a few reasons over a 404. I wanted the PTO's and hydraulics. Mine has a dump bed and I run a snow plow off of the truck hydraulics in winter. The 416 also has much beefier transmissions and axles as the others mentioned. Power steering is awfully nice on low speed trails too. So there is a lot to be said for going with a 416 too! The price is double and often times the trucks have been used a lot harder than a 404. They are tough though, mine is a 1971 model with over 10,000 hours on the engine. It starts immediately and runs 53mph no problem Being an old diesel, they smoke a little but that smell might actully be better than an old gasser.

Good luck with your search.

A 404 is more in my price range, and being well maintained is a plus. I guess the soft top wouldn't be that bad in the winter, as long as I can get plenty of heat . If the gas engines used in the 404 don't require alot of maintinace, then it would be a good deal for me.
A 406/416 would also be worth the extra money, because I would be getting power steering, and a diesel engine most likely. Also having a better transmission would be nice. If I go for a 406/416 I might have to wait a little longer to buy one, but might be worth the wait.
I guess in the end, I should go to some of those Unimog GTG's and talk to the owners, and maybe see if I can ride in them, and maybe even drive one .

Oh yeah, another question, I see that most of the 404's have gas heaters. Do the 606/616's have these too? and would it be easy to convert over to a heating system that runs off of the engines cooling system?

My 416 has a heater/defroster that uses coolant just like a regular automotive heater. BTW ALL 406/416 trucks are diesel, they use the OM352 engine, 5.7L inline six no turbo. The 416s are rated for 110hp and I think the 406 is ~90.

One other thing I forgot about the 406/416 is the compressed air system with resevoir. It is a very handy feature for airing tires etc.

The gas engines are pretty rugged. I think the main changes made are to switch to a 12V system from 24V and to use a Pertronics ignition conversion to eliminate the points system. Otherwise, I understand that they are very reliable.

If you are just planning on recreational use the 404 is hard to beat. The 406/416 is just a more industrial version.

This is getting very complex . I just want one for recreation use, and just the pure shock factor. I also like the fact that they are very loud, or at least the 2 I saw on Saturday were. I also want something that is fairly easy to maintain

Howdy Eric,
Found out the black Doka is for sale at $12,500 USD and the yellow Mog is going for $16,500 USD. Now save those pennies

This question might sound a little silly, but how much does it cost to replace the soft top on a 404. They almost look very durable and will last a long time. I know that on Jeeps, the tops don't always last all that long .

I also am wondering what a Doka is exactly, I have seen that term many times, and still am wondering.

Howdy Eric,
The second question is easier than the first so here is the answer. A doka is a crewcab. Now the other answer. Yes the ragtop can last for many years if you take care of it.Like if you park it for a while cover the cab if the Mog isn't parked inside. The top and side curtains that I had made in Germany cost about $600 USD. If you have the old top you can take it to an upholstery shop. As far as the plastic windows on the side curtians you can get creative in changing them. Prices for parts will be high compared to vehicles like Jeeps. But you won't have to buy the parts as often

$600 isn't that bad at all, I think a good top for a Jeep runs about that much.

How easy is it to adjust the valves on these things? I am looking at the maintenance schedule, and it looks like it needs to be done all the time

Howdy Eric,
With the Unimog valve adjustment tool people say it is a simple job. How often I don't know.
