Talking I want a Unimog now

After attending the WA GTG, and seeing the 2 Unimogs that showed up, I want a Unimog now. I am wanting to find out a little more about them, and was wondering if anyone can tell me the difference between the models, and what years are the best. What engines are the best on milage, I am guessing it would be a diesel. I am also wondering if I can buy a drivable one in the $4,000-$6,000 price range. Thanks in Advance for the help, since this will aid me in my researching of Unimogs

Howdy Eric,
Glad you liked the Mogs!¡ Did you catch the names of the Mog owners?¿ The 404 with gas engine can get around 13mpg. All other models are diesel and I don't know the mpg of them. Remember these are not freeway flyers. It is wise to stay 55mph or a little less. The price range you mentioned you can get a good running 404. As far as what model is best depends on a lot of things. I have seen the 404, 406, 416 all doing the same trails so they are all able machines. You just have to have an idea of what you want to do. Here is a site for you to look over. No Mog owner can be without it http://www.rockymountainmoggers.com I know this post will just conjure up more questions but the more info we get from you the more answers we can give. As you go along you might change your mind about what model you want, especially when you see what each one can do. So keep asking questions and we'll see what we can do. I say "we" becase there are a couple other Mog owners on the forum. Hope this helps.

I am thinking I want a 404 or a 416, and maybe a 406. I am thinking I want to go with a diesel engine, but a gasser will be find if I can't find one in my price range. I know I want something that is a closed cab, and it don't want something that has been restored. I will have many more questions as soon as I narrow it down on what I want.

Howdy Eric,
406/416 is basicly the same thing except for the wheel base. The 406 is a short wheel base and the 416 is the stretch. The 406/416 are newer than the 404 and usually over $10,000. The hard cab 404 is a rare bird so it will be a tough one to find. Here is a site where people sell Mogs. Yuo can also find it on the RMM site; http://unimog.net/exchange

You are right about the 406/416's being over $10,000. I think those are the ones I want, because I don't see too many 404's with diesel engines, however I did see a few with hard tops. I also would like one with a flat bed, and I don't want any of the accesories, except the PTO and hydraulics. This is making me think even harder . Maybe a 404 would work for me in the end

Howdy Eric,
You can get the pto on the 404 but not the hydraulics. You can get flat beds on all the models. The 404 was built to be a troop carrier for the military. They also hve the Koffer on the back for ambulance/radio. The 406/416 was made to be an implement carrier. Things like backhoes and streetsweepers. So they have the hydralics. They also have the power steering. The other thing the 404 was used for were fire trucks. Now those had hardtops with the porthole over the passenger. See how involved this can get?¿ But it's part of the fun of the Mog. And the better you get to know them the more amazed you are at what they can do. Welcome to the world of the Mog

I think the easiest thing for me to do now, is take as much of the data as I can and enter it into MS Excel so I can sift through the different model and options. This will make me have even more questions

Hey all! Another Mog-owner wanna-be here
Eric, that couple that showed up with the TD (parked next to you) have a Mog in their garage in pieces right now. I was talking with the gal(can't remember her name) and she said if we watch for Mog GTG's, to go to one and often there are a few who'll let ya take one for a spin We'll have to check on that. I'm trying to figure what I could sell to get a start on saving up for one. (My Sea-Doo hasn't been used for two years now ) But realistically, I don't see one in the budget for me for a couple years at the soonest, unless something really comes along. (Too many home-maintanace projects) But that'll give me time to check them out and narrow down what I want.
Is there a thread here with everyone posting pics of their rigs here?(Guess I can do a search)

I hoping now that I can buy one sometime within the next year, if things go as planned. I might wait even longer if I can't find the model I want, once I figure that out. I guess there is a Unimog here in Wenatchee, I just never see it driving around. My brother told me this after he saw some ski show on TV, and they were at Mission Ridge, and they featured a local man who has a Unimog.

Howdy Rick,
I think one of the guysin the area up there has a website. I'll check on it. Also if you and Eric want t play armchair 4 wheeler there are some good Mog videos out there. Some real good ones done by Brian Norton at Moab

Eric/Rick,

Glad to hear that you were so impressed!

The choices are unlimited as far as Unimogs go especially when you get into the 406/416 models. I have owned a 404 and presently have a 416 DoKa. The one thing that was somewhat important to me was top end speed. Getting to the trails is often more time consuming than the actual trails. Neither the 404/406 can be equipped to go any faster than 90km/hr(keep in mind that this is over flat ground with no rain or headwind).

Parts are cheaper for the 404 as well as the cost of the vehicle(usually). The 406/416 are a bit easier to work on as far as the axles , wheel hubs and seals are concerned. They also have a better designed transmission, ball bearings vs. bushings in the 404.

Personally, I prefer the diesel, simple to work on etc...... The 416/406 are more comfortable and in fact every newer generation of the Unimog is more comfortable than the previous.

In the end your decision will be made based on what you can afford. Just be sure to get what you want/afford because adding on pieces latter can become expensive.

If you want to check out some Unimogs go to the topica.com/lists/mogml/read and make a post with your intentions. There are several guys in your area and I am sure they won't mind showing you their trucks.

Please note that I did not say that one model was "better" than the other. Each model can provide great off road performance and meet the needs of it's owner. If it were up to me I would stil own the 404, driving it with the top down was great fun.
