99 ML430 Oil and Filter change
Need to do my first oil and filter change on the ML430. I've researched this and other sites and it appears that Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W40 is the best oil. Is there a filter that I can get at auto stores oor must that be from MB. If so, is there a specific filter to go with the 0W40?
By the way, great info on this site!! Thanks, Jim |

Millteck ....
You can also get your filters, etc. on this website (FastLane section) and support this forum. The prices are very close.

So you're aware of the recommendation on using an oil extraction device instead of pulling the drain plug?
There is no special filter for the 0w40 oil. Gilly

Yeah, recommended by MB to use an "oil sucker" like what they use on inboard boat motors to change oil. It goes all over the place if you pull the drain plug, some people have devised ways of channelling the oil into a pan, but recommended way is oil extraction, do a search on some of the info on the boards, or I can help link you to the info.
If you simply pull the plug it gets all over the frame rail, crossmember, engine mounts, etc and can cause problems, most degrades/swells the rubber components, like the engine mounts and so forth. Gilly

Gilly ...... oil filter change?
Did they change the oil filters again? Now, I'm reading about a "fleece" oil filter. I have been using the Mann filter (rated for extended changes with syn. oil) which kept the oil nice and clean over an approx. 8000 mi change interval. I was told that the original filter wasn't holding up for long periods, but the Mann filter (looks exactly like the MB filter) did the job. I believe that the cardboard ends on the original (Hengst?) weren't holding up for long periods drenched in syn. oil.

New Fleece Oil Filter
Bad time to do your first oil change as Mercedes-Benz has updated their oil filter from paper to fleece.. the new filter costs twice as much and has some rubber like string wrapped around it to hold the fleece in.. will they really improve the performance on the ML gilly?

I can't say as far as performance of the filtration system. Hopefully they will not come apart after an extended oil change period like the paper ones can do.
