Can you check the contents of the tube, or does it have the silver foil seal that you have to poke with a screwdriver? Should be black or like a dark charcoal color, smells sort of like RTV, like a vinagar-ish smell. Yeah, I'd accept no substitutes, although MB I believe does sell it. Seems to me when we got it from MB it actually was a tube of Loctite, just had an MB parts sticker on it.

Completely sealed, although a few spill splatters on the tube make it look like the contents are black.

The vendor swears that this tube is what MB specs for the job and the tubes are filled by Loctite under contract; but all of my service literature references Loctite 5900 specifically, not an MB part number for the sealant. Besides, Loctite is nowehere mentioned on the tube.

It could very easily be the right stuff, but I'm going to send it back; although a 50 ml tube would probably do the job just about perfectly. I've found another source that sells 300 ml tubes, which is way more than necessary; but, if that's what it takes to be sure that I have the right stuff, that's what I'll buy.

Sometimes you will see a real vague reference to the manufacturer on a label somewhere, for example on the 722.6 tranny fluid you will see a date listed, like a month/year, lets say for example "09/01", and then 3 letters, in the tranny fluid's case it says "DSH" which is Deutch Shell Hamburg, which makes the stuff. See if you can find something similar on your tube.

No references, other than "Made in Italy". There is a date code of sorts: "04BF649 FEB-05" All the rest is a standard M-B parts label.

There's just too much riding on this sucker to take a chance.

FWIW, the vendor is The Parts Bin in Hamilton, NJ; although this order was shipped from a subsidiary in Fairfield, OH.

Yeah, unless there is an "Italy, Minnesota" I wouldn't use it either.

Italy makes a few good cars, but you're right about the sealant. It's too bad that there's no way to reference back from a MB part number.

I did find the part number listed on the DCAG European Parts website, but all it says is "Sealant". Could be for the windshield for all I know.

If you have WIS, or access to it (hint hint to other members) and can find a few jobs which would call for 5900, such as R&R oil pan, or front timing cover, or I think they even use it for R&R the cyl head, they may list it there, but unsure about getting a small tube. Maybe Phil can locate it??? I'm sure a large or small tube would use the same part number, just the last 2 suffix numbers would be different, which denotes the quantity.

I've ordered a 300 ml tube from a Loctite supplier. More than I'll need, but at least I can be sure it's the right stuff.
