DIYers-Ever put on a roof?
My goal is to start buying homes and rehabbing them in the next few months. I have done most everything on houses and feel comfortable all around. I don't like electrical, (friend of mine died from electricity years back) but that's it. I have read about roofing, and it doesn't seem that difficult. Seems pretty straight forward.
Has anybody here got up there and done this? The entire job? Anybody done a tile roof? (I am helping this guy rehab a house now and he is giving me 1400 sq feet of Spanish roofing tile on the side ![]() How hard would you rate these jobs? Is it just take your time and patience? Or a little more than that? Thanks.

I've installed roofs. It's heavy, labor intensive dirty work. The confirmation of this in Denver, is that virtually all roofing crews are immigrant labor.
I haven't put on tile but I have put on metal, shingle and torch-down modifieds. Stripping off the old roof is the hardest part. Get the materials delivered to the rooftop if at all possible. The work is not technically demanding but it is easy for inspectors to see you working up there.

depends on the type of roof. In college I worked summers replacing asphalt flat roofs on office buildings. Hateful 3rd shift work. Guys with huge saws would cut slices of roof, and I'd haul it to the side of the building and drop it down a shoot. Invariably, it would rain, and we'd be rushing around in lightning trying to get 'Hot' down (hot, otherwise known as the tar from 'tar and feathering') and/or tarps down. Dah!
I've also done more conventional roofing- shingles and sheet wood. I actually enjoy this kind, provided you are not on too steep of a pitch. Make sure to get the proper sheet stock; there are several that look alike, but I've done SO many repairs on homes with regular pressboard, and that is the wrong stuff. They make a special pressboard for roofing that is very good, and I am blanking on the three letter name right now. brain freeze, because I just drove home my new 81 300TD! good luck! K

I ran a roofing/renovation business while in University and have just recently finished renovating my new home - top to bottom.
I've done a little over 200 roofs in the past 10 years. Many are simple, but like any trade, there are lots of little tricks and skills involved to do the job right. With asphalt shingles, it's pretty straight forward but the tricky part comes when you have an irregular, custom, or damaged roof. Knowing how to deal with flashings, chimneys, gables, skylights, etc. is crucial to doing a roof right. I've done plenty of fixer-upper jobs where the previous contractor or home owner had bungled things up and the roof was leaking. Leaks are often difficult to pin down and it's best to avoid introducing them in the first place through faulty installation. I've never installed tiles, so I can't offer much advice there. I do know that they are heavy and you want to make sure you have the required roof infrastructure to properly support them. So in short - if the roof is newer and simple, go for it. If the roof is older and/or is complicated - get some advice first. Good luck!
