no, I never watch Star Trek, yeah right...

I actually had the pleasure of meeting him (well ok I asked him a question) once maybe 15 years ago, give or take...
it was at Lehigh University, where he spoke for a while and then did a Q and A, then hung around for autographs and pictures.... somewhere I have a pic of me and him, somewhat out of focus, as well as Jimmy Doohan with two of my ex girlfriends/fiance's actually.
In case someone is wondering what I asked him, all I could think of was the commercial where he opens a garage door with a remote, and I asked if it was his house?
He asked me before answering, what was that a commercial for?
I guessed Stanley garage doors, which was wrong, and he said no it was a Visa commercial.

I didn't realize his age . . .

The news reports say he was 85. So, born in 1920? He was already 45 when he was cast as Scotty. When he died, he'd put in more than 50 years' work in stage, movies, and TV.

It's kind of a shock to see him in something else, either before ST:TOS or after. I have an early B & W "Man from U.N.C.L.E." episode on tape in which he plays a freighter officer. He was in "The Satan Bug" with George Maharis, too.

Apparently one of his great strengths was dialects ("accents") and voices. On the Animated Star Trek of '73-'74, he's credited with more voices than anybody else.

If you watch those old episodes, there are very very few people listed as cast members, like maybe 4? He did almost all of the "guest" voices on TAS.
He only messed up once on his accent in the TOS series.
In the episode "The Doomsday Machine", when he is showing Kirk how to set the self destruct system that he's rigged up, he says "thirty seconds later" in a non-scottish accent.

Those would be a trip to see. I used to watch the Man From Uncle without fail. It would be a trip if I remembered the episode but didn't connect the character with Scotty.

Are those tapes or DVDs available (Man from Uncle, that is)?

Some of the VHS tapes are available from Amazon. The episode is called "The Shark Affair," an early B & W starring Robert Culp (pre-"I Spy" and Cosby) as a modern-day (1964) pirate calling himself Capt. Shark. His motivation? He was trying to create a little enclave aboard his ship which would survive the soon-to-come nuclear holocaust and enable his group to restart civilization. Doohan played an officer (with a Scottish name -- "Mr. MacInernay") on another ship.

It frosts me that U.N.C.L.E. hasn't been released yet on DVDs that can be played on American machines, while crap like "Everybody Loves Raymond" is readily available.

I just want to add that the actor also landed on the beaches of Normandy on D-day. He went ashore and was shot twice; losing part of a finger and his life was saved by a metallic ciggarette case carried in a pocket. A fine actor, and a great American soldier!!

Ah Scotty

Scotty was the guy that inspired me to drink half a bottle of Jack Danniels on the job one day...

That was a cool show. It had special resonance with me because I was about 13 at the time, and had a blond mop not unlike David McCallum. I actually had two cheerleaders sigh and call me "Ilya." I was too young and clueless to know what I had before me. DOHHH!!
