Jag X-Type 2.5L Cancelled, is C-Class Next?

Jaguar is cancelling the bottom end X-Type 2.5L model and the outlook for the X-Type isn't promising, according to this article:

That thing was hideous anyway. So is the C-Class but the hatchback coulda been a really good rally car, I think.

Tough to compete with the A4 and BMW 3xi. I'm a big fan of the XJ's and can even tolerate the S Type jag but that X was junk.

The only X-types I see around here are the ones at the Hertz rental lot. I don't think Jaguar did a very good job marketing the cars and or providing agressive lease or financing programs. Even then, there is the image which the marketing department didn't seem to focus on.

The european manual trans diesel model did make it around the Nurimburgring at under 10 minutes and that is impressive. ...maybe it was the S-type...

I don't think the C-class is going away. The 201/2 and now 203 cars are among the best selling MB's ever.

203 sold 340,000 worldwide last year, a multiple of Jaguar's total production.

because in "Grace, Pace and Space", they could probably meet the last two criteria, but probably not the first one. "Grace" and "SUV" don't naturally go together (if one uses those sensual traditional Jag sedans as the benchmarks of this attribute).

But if they made one, it could steal sales from their Range Rover line ... which already uses the Jaguar V-8 engine ...

They should make a proper "shooting brake" (aka station wagon), which could meet all three criteria. Or something taller, which could compete with the Benz R-Class.

Going back to the original topic, the failure of the X-type is a textbook lesson in platform engineering. Status-conscious customers do not want their cars to share genes with those used by the hoi-polloi (i.e. Mondeo, as good as it is) ...

I bet Jag has an SUV on the back burner. It's not inconceivable, or at least there's some project codename. Lynx or bobcat or something.

Have you ridden in the canceled car? It is nothing but a little ****box Ford with a Jaguar nameplate. If you want a Ford save some bucks and just buy a Ford. You could superglue a Jag nameplate on it if that is what floats your boat.

San Jose Mercury News Drive column said--

about the new X-type wagon---

"Jaguar Coughs Up A Furball"

Couldn't have said it better myself, and SJMN seldom trashes a car. This one deserved it.
