Klipsch Speakers

I recently purchased a set of Klipsch Forte speakers (e-bay purchase) and I am rediscovering my "old" music again.

I am running the speakers between my refurbished Dynaco ST70 amp and with my Pioneer SX-1980 receiver (270 WPC) that I modified by adding a homemade tube pre-amp.

The sound from the Klipsch is like I have a live band playing in my basement.

Any other Klipsch fans out there?

Nice speakers. Klipsch are real particular about the front end. I've heard them with bad stuff and they sound horrible. I've heard them with good tube amps and they sing.

I bet they sound great with the Dynaco.

They were singing alright for about 1 hour when the main fuse blew in my Dyanaco. I did some research and concluded that I should have use the 8 ohm tap instead of the 4 ohm tap. I also fused my Forte's to protect them from my tube amp from shorting out and taking out the speakers.

I've been listening to them with my Pioneer and anything past 1/3 volume is insanely loud. My wife went out to the local library to pick up different types of music. Every type of music I play sounds increadable.

MedMech what are you driving your Forte II's with?

Boneheaddoctor don't kick yourself yet, check e-bay to see what your equipment is going for now.

I picked up my pioneer receiver back in 1980 for $500 since it was a discontinued model. They have been selling on e-bay between $1500 to $1800. I won't sell mine since they don't make them like they use to - the same goes for my Klipsch Forte's.

I am hoping to pick one up at a thirft store or yard sale very cheap one of these days.
I was about 2 minutes too late on getting a Sansui G-9000 and matching sansui high power speakers at Good Will once, the lucky guy stole it for $85
The list price for my Pioneer was $1295. If you can find one at thrift store or yard sale for a cheap price then the owner doesn't know what they have, not very many of the big Pioneers were made.

Back in the late 70's the Japaneese stereo companies had a power war to see who can come out with a receiver with the most power. Below is a list of receivers over 200 WPS along with the list price:

Technics SA-1000, 330 WPC, $1,700
Marantz 2600, 300 WPC, $1,600
Sansui G-33000, 300 WPC, $1,900
Pioneer SX-1980, 270 WPC, $1,295
Marantz 2500, 250 WPC, $1,595
Sansui G-22000, 220 WPC, $1,400

I wish I had a Good Will store near me with equipment like that.

Kipsch are great speakers, if a little "forward." Efficient as all get out, though. My little 3 WPC (yes, three watts) 300B triode amp loves that level of efficiency. I have had Altec Voice of the Theaters, JBL horn systems, newer Klipsch horn speakers, etc... Would love to find a pair of K-horns someday!!!

Whenever I see olf analog receivers in pawn shops or thrift stores I buy them up. Those things are workhorses! Same with turntables. I found a Dynaco PAS 2, ST70, FM2, and Janszen electrostatic speakers in the local classifieds one day... original owner, and I scored all that for $100. Didn't dicker at all as that was a GREAT price to begin with and the old guy was nice as could be. Oh, he had a turntable (Fairchild) in the lot too.

Nothing trumps the McIntosh MC75 tube amp I found in an army surplus store for $15 though!

True that. I've got a 70s Marantz system powered by their 1180DC integrated amplifier, along with a tuner and casette deck. Although the 1180 is 'only' 90W/ch, it really kicks. I'm lucky enough to have the rare Marantz rack cabinet to mount them all in. All that is missing is a Marantz 500M or equivalent power amp. Soon, my precious....soon.

A friend of mine owns a pair of Klipshorns, he listens to classical music predominantly. They're awesome speakers (if you have the room)!

Speakers are Altec Model 14s. All in all, the system sounds incredible and has a sound that is hard to put a finger on. Must have been the decade they were made in. Peace.
