Looked at this diesel yesterday

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1,1&item=4558520131&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT

The paint is original. Has a few pits and dings but no rust, no dents. The glass is all good. The interior is amazingly good. No tears or deep cracks. It has worn spots and creases, especially on the driver's seat. But the seat is comfy and intact. The advertisement says leather but it's MBTex, I'm pretty sure. The oil had nothing scarey in it (smooth and even texture, normal smell, no droplets). Same with the transmission fluid. The engine rubber stuff was all intact and uncracked. The engine was dirty from normal little-old lady driving. Nonsmoker and it doesn't smell liek anybody puffed a thing in it. The owner lives in a small town (St Martinville) and bought it new. She drove mostly around town and occasionally to the 'city' (Lafayette), hence, the low mileage.

I didn't run it because the seller wasn't around. He called me today at work (I left my card) and asked me to come back and drive it, said I'd be amazed at the pickup. I declined as it has already passed what was to be my high bid (I never gave one) and I didn't want to mislead him. It's a one-owner car.

If I were unmarried, or wanted to be unmarried I'd buy it.

But I promised Mrs Botnst that I'd wait and stick with the timetable we had previously budgeted for and buy a newer one (damn a woman with good sense!).

Bot

Botnst I was looking at that also but the price started to go into the "not a bargain" zone. You need to have a place to hide your toys
If you can stray away from diesels there is a 92 300E sprortline up here you can probably grab for <$1K.

Must...resist...temptation...

My focus and budget is on a diesel next year. I'd love to have another 124 and I saw one yesterday that looked like a 93-94. I almost had it but the woman wouldn't let go of the wheel, then the light changed and she was gone. It was an unusual color--sort of a champagne. Now with fingernail marks down one side.

I have not looked in depth at later model diesels, though Narwhal is (unfortunately) very happy with his. Not sure which year/chassis he has. The later model ones jump significantly in price. But that's why we've decided to budget rather than take a car note for used cars.

I told the guy who is selling the car (above) for the owner that I'd probably have bought the car had he not put it on eBay. I'm betting it would have sold for $2-$3k. Looks like it may now go into the $4K range. That was a good move on his part. Damn it.

Ebay 86' 124 5speed with clear corners
This is the 124 I was looking at... I expect it will go high as well.
I would like to get back into a standard though.

This looks like a fine car, and I actually put in a couple of bids on it, before bowing out in deference to people who obviously want it more than I.

One of these day's I'm actually going to *win* another MB diesel, at which point there is an high probability that my wife will cut my nuts off.

I was going to $3K on that car but it went passed there before I could bid. Had I won, I'd have bravely faced my wife, then grabbed my toothbrush and slept in my 'new' car.
