NYers to NYPD: 'I Do Not Consent to Being Searched'

OK, try walking!!

http://www.villagevoice.com/news/0530,weblee,66189,5.html

Reacting to the NYPD's announcement Thursday afternoon that police would randomly—but routinely—search the bags of commuters, one concerned New Yorker quickly created a way for civil libertarians to make their views black-and-white.

In a few outraged moments, local immigrant rights activist Tony Lu designed t-shirts bearing the text, "i do not consent to being searched." The minimalist protest-wear can be purchased here, in various styles and sizes. (Lu will not get a cut. The shirts' manufacture, sale, and shipment, will be handled by the online retailer. Lu encourages budget-conscious New Yorkers to make their own and wear them everywhere.)

Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly had announced the legally obvious—that New Yorkers are free to decline a search and "turn around and leave." But Lu, who is a lawyer at Urban Justice Center, warned that even well-intentioned cops could interpret people's natural nervousness or anger as "reasonable suspicion." The possibility of unjustified interrogation and even arrest is real, Lu said.

Although police promised they would not engage in racial profiling, Lu said that, as with all street-level policing, people of color and poor immigrants would be particularly vulnerable, especially if encounters lead to arrests.

Of course the Illegals and people with something to hide would have a problem.....tell them fine...walk!

you don't have the right to refuse and take a means of public mass transit...any more than you can tell the airport to stuff it....

Bunch of loudmouths in NYC who are short on brains whining...

I have a friend that trains bomb sniffing dogs and asked him why they don't put them at mall entrances, and other public places and he a said when dogs are used routinely in public places that weirdo will rub their clothes in some sort of explosive just to get a rise out of the dogs and ***** about their rights being violated.

A person would think that posting fido at entrances would be far more effective.

More effective and less likely to lead to accusations of racial profiling. Or at least so it would seem to me.

Shoot, I was going to post this, but you beat me to it.

Here's the whole story:

All I can say is I was wrong, Israel isn't the 51st state. We're Israel's 2nd state!

I have to be very honest, this is a very very very sad day in the history of the United States. Very sad indeed that it has come to this.

Ick.

"The plan is not workable and will not make New Yorkers more secure but will inconvenience them as police go about finding a needle in a haystack," Lieberman said.

That's about as accurate as you can get.

If you don't start the airport style security on the subways and buses, then why bother?

I can answer my own question:

It makes all the 'tards feel better. Just ask them. Every single one of them likes the addititional security presence. Makes them feel "safer".

All Ben Franklin would say is:

"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."

(I love Ben Franklin quotes)

I think for the time being, a lot of people are confusing liberty with convenience, but the line is getting increasingly blurred.

I can hear Al Sharpton yelling that the dogs are trained to sniff out and harass blacks.

Ever notice the same people *****ing about their liberty and the constitution are the same people who think its fine to deny citizens their second amendment rights to own a gun, two examples NYC and Washington DC.

I have to part company with you there bone. I support the second amendment and I go shooting once in a while. But to tell you the truth, when I go to work in DC every day, I already have to remember my wallet, keys, comb, cell phone, ID badges, sunglasses, reading glasses - I just don't have any more room in my pockets for a pistol!

If you cannot carry on daily affairs without being searched or stopped by a cop then this country is in a sad state. The house of reps just ****ted all over America today with the "patriot" act. Hopefully it doesn't pass the senate but no one seems to care.

This is total BS.

1. Let your representatives know that you believe that freedom is more important than bogus safety measures
2. Let people know that you do not agree with what is happening in airports and in NY. Wearing a T-shirt with a statement is an excellent way to do this.
3. Refuse to be searched. I would attempt other transportation if necessary.

My dad missed his flight yesterday because of a random search. Totally screwed the whole day up and completely pointless.

Yeah. All the founding fathers where prime examples. Huge supporters of random searches, soldiers staying in their houses, invasion of privacy, etc.
