blue angels

Its one of my least favored weekends of the year. This weekend with all the pomp and glory that is the celebration of noise, Seattle is blessed with its Seafair weekend. A weekend where up to half a million folks line the shores and waters of Lake Washington to spend about 40 minutes out of 10 hours watching hydroplanes actually race. The predictable highlight of this affair is the annual visitation by the Blue Angels stunt flying team. While they make an okay show, they spend several days before the weekend spreading terror and ire around the city. They fly between high rise buildings downtown, they fly within about 100’ of the lake’s surface, for which the cross lake traffic is obligated to be completely blocked for an hour or more. They make enough noise to stir the dead in their graves and cause countless windows to be broken. Your tax dollars at work for the glory that is worship of the military.

I can't for the life of me figure out the public benefit that's derived from their "performance" routine. Sure, the skills involved are amazing, but why is the Navy in the entertainment business?

Why is the government luring anybody to do anything--that's creepy. The Navy should be patrolling our territorial waters and that's about it. Leave the entertainment to Hollywood, and my tax dollars alone.

The military is a fine and necessary institution, but I despise the misapplication of public funds for inappropriate purposes.

I hardly find it inappropriate............

Ever hear of moral building....and the fact that most of this is in effect a training exercise for the public..

I didn't realize the public required training--personally, I'm self-trained.

The Blue Angels are a great marketing tool for the Navy. I enjoy airshows as rare as they are around here.

Do any of the other branches have such an advertising tool? Imagine if the Army had an M1 Abrams choreographed driving routine?

It's much much safer than parading ICBM's, SAM's and LRCM's down the street.

As far as their practice time and air shows go I say fine. From what I hear it must be a good show. As far as flying between high rise buildings and breaking windows (if this is true not having seen it for myself) they could use a little more common sense and go practice elsewhere.

I think they kick some major a$$. I love watching the Blue Angles, Thunderbirds, Red Arrows, etc... I don't mind a bit that a few of my tax dollars heads that way. The costs aren't what you'd think... aside from the personnel costs and fuel, they don't pay for much. The organizers of the airshow foot the bill for rentals cars, accomodation, etc..

I would be VERY surprised if this actually happens. Since that Italian team crashed at an airshow in Germany, the military has really cracked down on min. altitude, clearance for maneuvers, etc... They used to really let 'em rip in the good 'ol days!

Then you've plenty to despise. Not to get too far of-topic, but how do you feel about entitlements? I guess the point is "inappropriate" will vary from person to person. Given the fact that these pilots are going to be flying to maintain their qualifications anyway, I don't see the problem with making those flights public displays. But that's my opinion. Certainly, others will disagree.
