yes it is. what you lose by not staying on campus costs much more than any dollar amount you can ascribe to it

I'm curious however do you also carry over a big balance on your credit cards right now or do you keep them all paid off?
Nope, nope and nope. I graduated college debt free. I put myself through. Some scholarships, a little financial aides, and a lot of hard work. Worked three jobs a day for four years. Worked in the farm and construction work on weekends, whoever hired me. I did not own a car while in college, so living off-campus was out of the equation. As a matter of fact, did not own my first car till two years after I left college. Paid cash for my first car, all $800 worth of bondo, a '69 Camaro.

Don't carry credit card. Never had, never will. If I can't pay cash, I won't buy it.

smart man about the credit cards....lot more people need to grasp that concept.

But Its good to have one...for credit history...but have the dicipline to not use it for stuff you can't pay off immediately.

I can't believe millions of people still fall for the oldest credit card scam: "open store card today and saves 10%". Duh, the store card carries a 23% APR. You are bettter off wait till holiday sales since it seems there is one a month.

Life in the dorms can vary greatly, for instance; I attend a small private school that sets very high academic standards and would be impossible to commute, simply because you would need that driving time for studing. Now, I LOVE my dorm room. I know just about everyone on my floor and we all get along very well. Now, here's the sweet thing, I get my own room. I know many here would be again it but I need it as it is about as sound-proof as it can get with the door closes. On top of that, this dorm building is subsance free, making it a great study environment for me. The cool thing is though is that my school has ONE rule, behave as a gentlemen on and off of campus. The way the rule was explained to us is that we can pretty much do whatever as long as it doesn't bother anyone else. For example, though my building is subsance free; I can drink all I want, I just can't bother anyone else by making an a** of myself or making a lot of noise.

The point is, you'll be allowed a lot of independence by just living in the dorm. When you want to talk to your buddies you just walk right down the hall or next door and there they are. It's not hard to find someone to help you with homework when everyone on your floor goes to the same school and you can bet that some of them are or have taken that class. This practice is very common in my building as about 75% of the kids in here are pre-med so they have very rigorous schedules. To all that are doctors here, my hat's off to you as I see how had you guys have to work to get that MD at the end of your name.

Anyways, if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask and I'll be more than glad to help in anyway possible. I'm a freshman this year so I'm going through it all now.

Get the dorm! If you're going to college in the city where you live, then go out of town! You need to learn responsibility, so if it's financially possible, by all means go to school out of town. I haven't looked back yet. BTW, I don't have my car here with me on campus and I have yet to be stranded. Then again my school is very small (850 guys).

Thanks
David

uh exactly. If you had lived in the dorms you might be a lot better off now and if you haven't you can't know what you missed. My life sucked terribly when I was living it according to the penny pincher's mantra. There are ways to make money other than saving it (not that saving is a bad thing but it shouldn't override normal college life).

You can never hope to perform and earn at your full potential if you don't have good mental health. I learned from my parents (collosal penny pincher's) a tendency to save money and people scoff at the fact that I save regardless of the amount. Tonight is a good example. Movie tickets cost a dollar extra if you use a debit card so I always make sure I have cash and will even pay for others with it when going to the movies. I don't use a non-bank ATM if there is one in network close by. I have bought 3 mercedes off ebay (93 400E W124 , 95 C36 TT W202, and 99 W210 E300 TD (paid for and driven by my mom) and often buy great old used audio equipment. I go by quality and performance not the fact that it is new or the price and if I can find something that I like that performs as well or better than something new I go for it. My point is focus on earning, enjoying life, maintaining a healthy mind, being content, and conserving in that order. There are times when you have to work hard and save hard but when you have a choice make the decisions considering values in that order.

It's about 10 grand per year just for the dorm. I found it easier to dorm and keep the car since I will need it for my internships which are a few towns away. My school makes you do 4 internships as classes so I will be all over the place. How about getting a dorm room with a 1000 dollar car instead of all the money you wanted to spend on it... ?

Dorms. It'll broaden your life in all sorts of ways. Look around for a 2 or 3 K Benz or Beemer. Might need a little more work than the 15k but that'll help you get some o' those scars that chicks dig.

I think it costs me maybe $2k? That doesn't unclude the meal plan which is another $1,500. I received a lot of financial aid so I don't know how much of it I pay.

Thanks
David

Ouch. It's $3K-5K here depending on which dorm you get. There are a ton of houses and apartments off grounds here that you can rent with a few other people. Maybe check into that. It's all students and just a short walk so the same as the dorm but you can maybe get a better deal.

I'm definately in the minority here. I decided to stay at home for undergrad, and move out-of-state for law school. I figured I'd rather rack up the inevitable debt while in law school, rather than being burdened with debt before even entering law school (~$50K/yr, 3 years...ouch!). Most of my friends live in dorms and I even stayed in dorms for 2 summers. I really didn't feel as though I was missing much. I think a lot depends on hows trict your parents are. If they are the type that like to constantly keep tabs on you, then it may be a better idea to move out now and be on your own. For what its worth, I really don't regret living at home for undergrad. Getting chicks was never a problem, and if you live in a town or community with a number of commuter students (I know you do...) then you won't really feel too ostracized for not living on campus. Besides, with $15K you can get a nice enough Benz that getting girls will not really be too much of a problem.....ask me how I know
