It's hard to figure that kind of mindset. The only point I want to make is no one people has a lock on barbarism. We or our ancestors all been capable of it and proved the fact.

Some of the massacres of Native Americans in the late 1800s containded scenes of vicous depravity, according to eyewitnesses. I'll never know what my ancestors might have done in that. My dad's people were cattle men in Arizona/New Mexico going back to the mid 1800s, at least that's as far as we know. But, life is com - ill - cated. I can just picture this great-great-grandad of mine, a picture of whom I've seen, with his men around his chuckwagon, all of 'em looking like they're about to whoop your a$$. I wonder what he'd say if I could talk to him in weepy tones about the slaughter of the Indiginous peoples.
He'd prolly whoop ya.

After the Sand Creek Massacre, led by the Methodist minister, Chivington, the 'victors' cut off the breasts of the female victims and paraded them up and down the streets of Denver.

Can't say as I share his sympathies. I believe that if Pelagius (Augustine's archenemy) had won the battle for orthodoxy, the history of thought and culture would have been better off.
I teach mostly Into to Philosopy and Ethics, although I do a self-paced Comparative Religion course regularly. I'm teaching a class in the Scottish Enlightenment Spring Semester and taking students to Scotland as part of the course. You're welcome to join us. $1950 from Denver for 9 days, all included except lunch. Tution about $250 on top of that.

Aren't all massacres vicious and depraved by definition?

I disagreee. I believe that it was better that the Orthodoxy took Augustine's view. I have to go to that class in about 20 minutes so I won't go into it now, but maybe some other time. I do find it funny though beacuse he does mention how most people would like Pelagius' view. He's not always the most politically correct when he states why. This guy is by far the funniest prof or teacher I have ever had.

Have you published any works? I might speak with him and could maybe refer you to some of his articles. He's always writing about something.

Thanks
David
