AOL and Yahoo to "tax" non-profit groups' emails
I received this from an organization I belong to. I'm posting this not to promote my own ideals, but to warn others that this tax can also affect any organizations you belong to. Help fight this!! ( Link provided at bottom.)
From the Desk of: Steve Elliott, President Grassfire.org 2/16/2006 Stefano, AOL and Yahoo have announced that they will soon begin imposing their own delivery fee (i.e. private sector "tax") on email sent by groups like Grassfire to our team members. If they succeed, we expect every internet provider will follow their lead. Note-- you will NOT directly pay this fee -- it will be paid by groups like Grassfire. But indirectly, you WILL pay in several ways, including the possibility of having your Grassfire emails cut off and an immediate muzzling of online grassroots activism. Even worse -- we believe this will mark the beginning of the end of the free email era! This is one of the most serious threats to grassroots citizen activism that we have seen. We are launching a petition to stop this plan and I am asking every Grassfire team member to take immediate action with me to stop this dangerous threat. For more information, including an audio report, and to sign the petition: http://www.grassfire.org/68/petition.asp?RID=3820199 Thank you for your prompt attention. Steve Elliott, President Grassfire.org Alliance

Yahoo has recently started demanding registration of senders from corporate accounts. They claim the intent is to fight spam. Registration is actually a good idea, but Yahoo has chosen a heavy handed and clumbsy route where they will dump corporate senders email into the bulk folder, even when the corporation is not listed on any spam senders sites and provide no information about why. This amounts to coercion.
In addition, what I read about the sender’s fee was that it was to fight spam. The truth is that it has nothing to do with spam and is simply a ruse to rake in millions of $$ for Yahoo’s “free for life” email accounts. Spam senders would not be effected in the slightest as traditionally, spam senders will use a bogus “from” account and are thereby immune from sender's fees. AOL has stated they may or will follow Yahoo’s lead. The idea of registration is a good one and will help to fight spam. But Yahoo’s approach is back handed at best.
