I would say no, you aren't an alcoholic, because you have the objectivity to actually ask yourself that question. You are concerned enough about your behavior to reflect on it rationally. And I say that as someone who flirted with alcohol dependency about 10 years ago.

I didn't reach for a drink when I woke up, nor did I keep a bottle in the desk drawer at work. But I was miserable at work and started off by drinking a glass of wine when I got home, "just to take the edge off". That glass became two, then three, then the whole bottle eventually. My wife helped me realized I was drinking too much, and for the wrong reasons, and encouraged me to make the changes I need to make in my life so that I didn't have to compensate for it with alcohol.

Its 10 years later and I'm still very happy to drink socially at a party or have a nice bottle of wine with a nice meal. But that's it. Its a huge step, being able to ask yourself that question. I think the next question you need to ask yourself why you crave the drink, and if there is anything you need to change in your life to remove the need.

I think there is a lot of truth here.

The person you should ask about drinking is your primary physician--his opinion is the one that matters the most. Now, here in the buckle of the Bible Belt, one may not be able to get an objective answer, but you probably know whether or not your physician is Baptist

And as long as you're not drumming your fingers on the table waiting for both hands of the clock to hit 12, you're probably OK.

You didn't list the exceptions to this rule: Bloody Marys (and Marias), Mimosas, Kirs, Kir Royal's, Bellini's, Pimm's CuppsChampaigne in general and Red Eyes

But yeah, since he said he was a bourbon drinker, you are technically right

Being an alcoholic and having an alcohol problem are usually related, but not necessarily. For example, if I were a teatottler and my wife had one drink every month or so and we fought over it, then both of us have an alcohol problem.

If alcohol interferes with your life or the life of people you love, then you have a problem (or if you get drunk and drive 80 mph, oopsie, 'nuther thread ...).

OMG, can I use that. I am going to print this out and put it in my desk and can probably use it 2x per week (not at home, in my biz).

Ask your liver.
OK, fine... ask your doctor to have your liver checked. Blood test, and a urine test ought to do.

Why? My aunt died last year at age 47, she bloated, yellow all over, and spent the last few days in a diaper, because she was too weak.

So.....Check your liver!

Moderation is the key, nothing wrong with a good buzz,BUT.....

A couple of cocktails and you will perceive things the way they could be,a couple more and you view them as you would like them to be,more still and you see things as they really are,THAT is the danger of too much.

Be a little bit careful about confessing any alcohol issues with your physician,,,, unless you are on the stretcher, suffering from the DT's. Here in Pa. a fellow told his doc he drank a 6 pack a day. The doc told the state and his license was immediately revoked. A year later he still hadn't gotten them back.

He may have diabetes and not even know it and could be killing himself with just a little booze.

Perhaps, but that reminds me of the suicidal furniture refinisher who killed himself by drinking linseed oil and shellack....

He may have had a miserable life but he had a FINE finish!
